San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls and veteran defenseman Ed Hill have agreed to terms for the 2006-07 season, General Manager Martin St. Amour announced Wednesday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hill, who will turn 26 in October, had 36 points (8g, 28a) and 63 penalty minutes in 52 games split between the Phoenix Roadrunners and Utah Grizzlies in 2005-06. Of his 36 points, 24 were scored on the power play (6g, 18a). Hill began the season with the Roadrunners before being traded to the Grizzlies on Dec. 6 in a three-team deal that also included the Augusta Lynx.

The 6-foot-3-inch, 210-pounder from Newburyport, Mass. also notched two assists and eight penalty minutes in 16 American Hockey League games, split between the San Antonio Rampage and Peoria Rivermen.

"We needed some help on our blue line, especially when it came to the power play and having Ed join our squad next season will vastly improve both," St. Amour said. "He's a proven player in this league and has a ton of AHL experience, so Ed will not only provide leadership on the ice, but in the locker room as well."

Now a five-year veteran, Hill began his professional career with the Florida Everblades in 2001-02. He played parts of four seasons with Florida before being traded to Peoria (then in the ECHL) early in 2004-05. Hill finished that campaign as the Rivermen's leader in plus-minus (+25).

In 279 career games as a professional, Hill has tallied 89 points (18g, 71a) and 251 points. Of his 18 career goals, 15 have been scored on the power play. Hill has also played in 108 total games in the AHL, tallying eight points (1g, 7a) and 91 penalty minutes. He was a second round pick (61st selection overall) by the Nashville Predators in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Professional Hockey Players' Association, player contracts cannot be approved or registered by the ECHL until June 6.

The Gulls open their fourth season in the ECHL in October. Season ticket packages are currently on sale. For pricing and benefits, contact 619-224-GOAL, ext. 7.
