San Francisco Dragons News Release

San Francisco, CA - After leading the San Francisco Dragons to a playoff berth in their inaugural season, Ryan Powell was today named the Major League Lacrosse Warrior Offensive Player of the Year.

The award was based on votes submitted by the General Manager and the Head Coach of each of the 10 Major League Lacrosse Teams. Powell, along with other MLL honorees, will be acknowledged Saturday, August 26th at the 2006 Major League Lacrosse Awards Luncheon.

Powell finished the regular season with 34 goals, 24 assists, 58 points and averaging 5.8 points per game with a .486 shooting percentage. Despite playing in only 10 of 12 regular season games, his 58 points were second in the league only behind Conor Gill of Boston who tallied 62.

"Ryan was simply dominant this season," commented Dragons General Manger Doug Locker, "he stepped up big in crucial situations and provided tremendous leadership all season long."

Dragons Head Coach Brian Silcott agrees.

"There is a lot of offensive talent in the MLL, but this summer Ryan clearly stood out from the crowd. He was the focus of every team we faced and still put up ridiculous numbers.

"He is impossible to guard with just one defender," Silcott continued, "and as the year went on, people discovered that two defenders did not fair much better with him than one."

While Powell's entire season was stellar, there are a few performances that stand out. One such performance was a Week 4 25-20 victory over the Denver Outlaws. The Bud Light Player of the Game, Powell had an astonishing 9 goals and 3 assists for a total of 12 points and was named MLL Offensive Player of the Week. The 9 goals (a hat trick three times over) tied him with three others (Tim Goettelmann, Kevin Leveille and Mark Millon) for the most goals in a single game in MLL history. The 12 points were good enough to tie Millon for second-most points scored in an individual game.

In the July 1st meeting against the New Jersey Pride, Powell was again named Bud Light Player of the Game when he had 8 points total (4 Goals, 4 Assists). One of the goals came just seconds into an overtime period, giving San Francisco a sudden victory over New Jersey. Once again, Powell was named MLL Offensive Player of the Week.

On July 8th in a 20-9 win over the Chicago Machine, Powell again reached the double-digit plateau in points. Again the Bud Light Player of the Game, Powell scored 5 goals and tallied 5 assists for 10 points total.

The Dragons will look for another dominating performance by Powell against the Outlaws as Denver and San Francisco prepare to face each other in the semifinals in Los Angeles Friday, the first day of the 2006 New Balance Championship Weekend.
