Postponed Battery vs. Kickers Match Rescheduled for July 22
July 1, 2014 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charleston Battery News Release
CHARLESTON, SC: The Charleston Battery will host the visiting Richmond Kickers at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, in a make-up match rescheduled from June 27 by severe weather.
Lightning near Daniel Island forced officials to postpone that June 27 match between the two historic rivals in the 18th minute of play with the game still scoreless. League rules typically call for postponed matches to resume where they left off. But after polling both clubs, USL PRO elected to restart the game from scratch.
Tickets for the historic rivals' final regular-season meeting of 2014 on July 22 are on sale for $10 -- $18 [971-GOAL (4625) / www.charlestonbattery.com]. Anyone with a ticket to the June 27th match may redeem that ticket for July 22 at no additional charge. Tickets will be exchanged for seats of equal value.
Please call the Battery front office in advance to exchange your ticket and arrange to have your new ticket waiting for you at the Will Call tent by the West Stands entrance.
The rescheduled match adds an important contest to an already busy week. Charleston will travel to Richmond on Saturday, July 19, before hosting Arizona United SC for the first time on Saturday, July 26, at Blackbaud Stadium.
Formed the same year as the Battery in 1993, Richmond is one of Charleston's oldest rivals. The Battery's first-ever league match was against Richmond on May 1, 1993, in a game played at Stoney Field in downtown Charleston. The Battery won 2-1 behind goals from Mario Lone and Nigel James. Current Richmond Coach Leigh Cowlishaw scored the lone Richmond goal from the penalty spot.
In the 49 complete games played in the series so far, the Battery and Kickers are level on 22 wins, 22 losses, and five draws.
Dave Wagner, United Soccer Leagues' executive director for Competition and Operations, said the league's decision means that none of the minutes, statistics or disciplinary records compiled on June 27 will count in official league data. That means Richmond Captain Henry Kalungi's yellow card from the early minutes of the original match will not apply in the do-over contest.
