Stockton Ports News Release
Stockton's balanced offense and solid defense helped propel the Ports (19-27) past the Visalia Rawhide (24-22) in the series finale, 7-4. The victory enabled the Ports to avoid being swept again by Visalia, and snapped Stockton's three-game losing streak. The Ports will enjoy an off day on Tuesday before welcoming the San Jose Giants to Banner Island Ballpark.
The Ports totaled 10 hits in the contest, including three for extra bases. Todd Johnson finished the game 1x3 with two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Jeremy Barfield totaled two hits in the game with a double, and Stephen Parker finished 3x4 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
Justin Murray allowed three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings. Ports reliever Trey Barham picked up the win, his third, tossing 1.1 scoreless, hitless innings. Paul Smyth collected his eighth save of the year, striking out one to close out the ninth inning.
The Ports were the first to score, pulling ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second on Stephen Parker's two-run home run to the center field Metro PCS Home Run Hill. It was his eighth home run of the year.
The Rawhide responded in kind in the top of the third, as Paul Goldschmidt hit his second home run of the series and ninth on the year, a two-run shot to the Jackson Rancheria Back Porch in right field to tie the game.
But the score didn't stay tied for long. In the bottom of the fourth, Johnson led off with a walk. He stole second while Parker was at-bat. Parker then singled, and moved to second on an error by Rawhide right fielder Kyle Greene. Johnson came around to score on the play. Ports first baseman Mike Spina then walked to put two on with one out for catcher Ryan Ortiz. Ortiz, an Oregon State product, collected an RBI single to make it 4-2.
In the top of the fifth, Murray allowed his third and final run. With two out, he walked third baseman Ryan Wheeler. Goldschmidt then stepped up to the plate and slammed a double off the wall in right field, and Wheeler came racing home to make it 4-3. The Ports then called on Barham to pitch, and he got left fielder Marc Krauss to ground out to end the inning.
The Ports bats stayed active in the fifth frame. With one out, shortstop Grant Green singled. Then Johns collected a hit to put two on for Barfield. Barfield roped a double to center field to drive home two more runs. Later in the inning, Spina knocked an RBI single to bring home Barfield and give the Ports a 7-3 advantage.
Stockton reliever Andrew Carignan surrendered a leadoff solo home run to Wheeler in the eighth inning. It was the last hit the Rawhide would get off Ports pitchers, who retired the last six Visalia batters of the game in order.
The Ports will host the San Jose Giants from Wednesday through Saturday at Banner Island Ballpark. On Wednesday at 7:05 PM, RHP Shawn Haviland (3-1, 3.47) will start for Stockton, while RHP Kyle Nicholson (3-2, 5.87) will take the hill for San Jose.
