Portland Thorns FC Striker Sophia Smith Named March/April Player of the Month, Presented by EA SPORTS

May 4, 2023 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) News Release

NEW YORK - The National Women's Soccer League announced today that Portland Thorns FC striker Sophia Smith has been named the Player of the Month, presented by EA SPORTS, for the months of March and April by the NWSL Media Association and the NWSL's on-air broadcast talent.

Kicking off her 2023 Golden Boot campaign early, the league's reigning MVP has enjoyed a hot start this season, notching four goals and four assists across six matches to lead the league in scoring.

The Windsor, Colorado native opened her scoring account on March 26 with a goal in the Thorns' season-opening win over the Orlando Pride. A week later, she notched her first career hat trick with a trio of goals in a 4-1 rout of Kansas City. Smith also tallied a quartet of assists, including two in the Thorns' 2-0 shutout of Racing Louisville FC on April 22.

The forward recorded a league-high 16 shots on target and completed 19 dribbles past opponents throughout March and April, helping her team to an unbeaten 3-0-2 regular season record and a spot atop the league standings.

The NWSL Player of the Month presented by EA Sports is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis, and the NWSL's on-air broadcast talent. Votes are based on player performances from both regular season play and the 2023 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup.
