Playoff Spots Up for Grabs
August 13, 2003 - Central Baseball League (Central League) News Release
The Central league season ends Aug. 23 and with 10 or 11 games to play the division and wild card races are close.
In the East, Fort Worth has a 1½-game lead on first-half winner Jackson. If the Senators win the second half, their playoff team will be the team with the best overall record in their division. In that race, Fort Worth has a one-game advantage on Shreveport.
In the West, Coastal Bend has reversed a second-to-last place first-half finish and leads first-half champion Edinburg by one game, San Angelo by 2½ games and Rio Grande Valley by three games. If Edinburg wins the second half, the West Division team with the next best overall record would get the playoff berth. Due to a 17-31 first-half record, Coastal Bend does not figure in the wild card race. Amarillo (44-41) has a one-game lead on San Angelo (43-42) in the West wild card.
The divisional playoffs will begin in Jackson and Edinburg on Aug. 25-26. After a one-game layoff, the best-of-five series will conclude in the parks of the second-half playoff team Aug. 28-30. After an off day in-between series, the best-of-five Central League Championship Series will begin Sept. 1-2 at the site of the West Division champion and conclude Sept. 4-6 in the East.
