Playoff Preview
March 26, 2010 - All American Hockey League (AAHL)
Battle Creek Revolution News Release
As March Madness winds down Playoff Hockey begins in the Cereal City, as the Battle Creek Revolution, the second place finishers in the All American Hockey League, will begin their quest for the coveted Davidson Cup this Friday night at Revolution Arena. The Revolution (23-18) will host the first two games of their First Round, best-of-five playoff series against the 3rd Place Evansville Icemen (20-23) this weekend on Friday, March 26th and Saturday, March 27th. The puck will drop for both of those games at 7:30 at Revolution Arena. The Battle Creek Revolution have the possibility of hosting seven home playoff games at Revolution Arena (The Rink). Individual playoff game tickets will be $9 for a reserved seat and $8 for a general admission for each round of the 2009-2010 AAHL playoffs. A playoff season ticket is available for $50 for all 7 Revolution potential home playoff games.
The Battle Creek Revolution own the best overall home record in the All American Hockey League winning 14 of 21 games at the friendly confines of Revolution Arena this season. The Revolution tout a 13-1 record this season against teams other than the 1st Place Chi-Town Shooters at home, including a 6-1 record at home this season against Evansville, and a cumulative 14-2 record against the Iceman in front of the Revolution faithful. The Revolution own the all-time series lead with a record of 14-7 against the Icemen, including a straight swept of Evansville in the American Hockey Association first round playoff series last season, and hope for, as Yogi Berra would say, "déjà vu all over again," during the 2010 playoff rendition of this rivalry. The Revolution have also never lost a home playoff game in the history of the organization going a perfect 4-0 against the Evansville Icemen and the Chi-Town Shooters at Revolution Arena (The Rink) last season.
The Revolution faced off against current starting goalie and former Evansville Icemen, Matt Wagner in the playoff series last season. The Icemen lost on no account to the play of Wagner who stopped 66 of 71 shots, an efficiency of 92%, including halting 36 of 37 shots in the Revolution's 1-0 win over the Icemen in Game 2 of the series. For all intents and purposes, Wagner turned Revolution Arena into a "goal-free zone" for the first 43 minutes and 28 seconds of the game.
An old cliché refers to the fact that another man's trash is another man's treasure, and in the case of Matt Wagner, another team's release became our goalie. Wagner was released by the Evansville Icemen earlier during the 2009-2010 season, but he would not be a free agent for long. Much like getting a Christmas present that wasn't on your list or having the just the right amount of money for a food order when you go through a drive threw, the Revolution received the "Gift of Wagner" just in time for their playoff run. With the signing of Wagner to wear Revolution red, white, and blue, the Rev's finally had a suitable replacement for #1 Goaltender, Matt Kinsella, who went down with an injury in December, causing him to miss more than two months of the season.
Like a home run pitch float right down the middle, the former Icemen and Edmonton, Alberta native, led the Revolution on a four-game winning streak, even beating the team that let him go twice during the run. Wagner went on to go 10-7 on the season for the Revolution, filling in as a much needed piece to the team's playoff puzzle. Along with other late season moves like the addition of former Revolution coach and player, Mark Allen, and professional hockey experience with likes of Joe Pace, Andy Howard, and Alex Lebda, brother of Red Wings player Brett Lebda, to the team the Revolution are prime for a playoff run of both thrilling and chilling proportions.
The Battle Creek Revolution Hockey Club asks its fans attending the playoff games on Friday and Saturday to "White Out" Revolution Arena. In a tradition that dates back to the late 1980's and the playoff games of the Winnipeg Jets and multiple other teams including the Penn State Nittany Lions, Phoenix Coyotes, and Miami Heat who adopted the tradition of having their fans wear all-white when attending specific playoff games. So, be a part of history, and "White Out" Revolution Arena, for the first game promotion of its kind in the Cereal City. All Revolution fans are encouraged to wear white for the first two AAHL home playoff games versus the Evansville Ice Men.
