Playoff-Bound Soul Battle for 1-Seed

Philadelphia Soul News Release

Three teams with a shot at the number one overall seed, all within a game of each other in the standings, with only two weeks left in the regular season. Confused yet? Us too, but fear not, as we break down the three scenarios that put the Soul in the top spot for the Playoffs.

Scenario 1 - Take Care of Business Ourselves

The simplest path for the Soul, and the easiest to explain, is to win its remaining two games. Up first is Baltimore at home this Saturday (7pm, Wells Fargo Center), followed by a trip to Albany to take on the Empire. However, even in the simplest scenario there is a wrinkle. For this to work, the Soul would need to defeat Baltimore by at least 25 points on Saturday, which would give them the season advantage in head-to-head point differential.

Remember when you and your buddies said garbage time points don't matter? Go ahead and kick yourself, now! So what happens if the Soul are able to beat down the Brigade this weekend, but not by a 25-point margin? That leads us to Scenario 2...

Scenario 2 - Get By With a Little Help From Our Friends

Let's say the Soul grab the victory on Saturday by less than 25 points. The team would still have the requirement of coming back from Albany with a win on July 7. So the good news is the Soul would still control their fate. The bad news is we would need the Valor, the team with a single win on the season, to upset Baltimore in the final week. This would give the Soul a 1-game lead in the standings, and the number 1 overall seed.

But (there's that word again), what if the Soul take care of business by beating Baltimore, but then stumble against Albany? That must put an end to this madness, right? Think again!

Scenario 3 - Saved By The Unlikeliest of Heroes!

Stay with me now. The Soul beat Baltimore, but lose to Albany. Yet out of what seems like nowhere, the Valor start to capitalize on the steady play of QB Arvell Nelson and find a way to upset BOTH Albany this weekend, and Baltimore next. Boom, the Soul are the #1 seed despite stumbling in Albany on the final day of the regular season. That would be the good news. The bad news? The Soul would be facing off against a suddenly hot Valor team in the first round.

Ok, got all that? Good!

It comes down to this - the only common element in each scenario is that the Soul need to defeat Baltimore this Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center.
