Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME ¬" Derek Whitmore netted the game-winning goal at the 12:04 mark of the overtime period to send the Portland Pirates to a 3-2 victory over the Connecticut Whale in Game Two of the American Hockey League Divisional Semifinals played tonight in front of 5,029 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Whitmore totaled two goals and an assist for the night and Matt Ellis rounded out the Portland scoring effort with a first period goal. With the victory the Pirates own a 2-0 series lead over Connecticut.
Francis Lemieux and John Mitchell each tallied goals for the Whale who lost their sixth straight playoff game dating back to the 2008-09 playoffs (then the Hartford Wolf Pack).
Portland jumped out to a short-lived lead five minutes into the game on a goal by Ellis, and Connecticut would have a quick answer later in the period. Lemieux tied the game at 15:26 and Mitchell gave the guests their first lead of the series only 76 seconds later on a power-play goal. The score would remain the same through a scoreless second period where the Whale led in shots 19-15. Whitmore tied the game on an unassisted goal with 7:40 remaining in the third period to send the game to overtime, and topped that effort with a two-on-one breakaway goal in overtime to send the Pirates to victory.
The Pirates outshot the Whale 36-25, as Leggio earned the victory for Portland to run his postseason record to 2-0, and overall record against the Whale this season to 5-1-0. Dov Grumet-Morris received the loss in net for Connecticut.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were: 1. Whitmore, 2. Ellis and 3. Grumet-Morris.
