
Pirates Knock off Whale

PORTLAND, ME - Mark Mancari scored a goal and two assists to lead the Portland Pirates to a 5-4 win over the Connecticut Whale in Game 5 of their Atlantic Division Semifinal Series played tonight at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
The Pirates now lead the best-of-seven series 3-2 with Game 6 scheduled for Saturday in Hartford.
Travis Turnbull, Luke Adam, Dennis McCauley and Mark Parrish also scored for the Pirates while Dennis Persson collected three assists.
Kris Newbury scored twice for the Whale while Chad Kolarik and Brodie Dupont also scored.
Mancari opened the scoring for the Pirates with a power-play goal (ending a zero for 25 stretch) midway through the first to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Turnbull followed six minutes later to up the count to 2-0 Portland after one. Adam gave the Pirates a 3-0 lead 45 seconds into the third to chase Connecticut goalie Dov Grumet-Morris. Cameron Talbot stepped in between the pipes and the Whale got on the board as Newbury connected on the power play to cut into the Pirates lead. McCauley restored Portland ¬â¢s three-goal lead midway through the period but Newbury scored his second of the game just 21 seconds later to make it a 4-2 game. Kolarik completed the scoring in the second period, and brought the Whale to within one at 4-3, when he scored the Whale ¬â¢s second power-play goal of the period. Dupont tied it early in the third but Parrish responded with a power-play goal (with Dupont in the box) 1:08 later, which turned out to be the game winner.
The Pirates out shot the Whale 40-38 in the game as David Leggio posted the victory.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Mancari, 2. Pirates forward Corey Tropp (two assists) and 3. Newbury.
Game 6 of the series will be played Saturday at 7 p.m. at the XL Center in Hartford. The game can be heard live on 95.5 News Talk WLOB and on-line at portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
