Pierre-Marc Guilbault receives Guy-Lafleur excellence award

MONTREAL, Thursday, June 8, 2006 (QMJHL) - The Montreal Canadiens and Molson announced today the recipients of the Guy-Lafleur Awards of Excellence and Merit for the 2005-06 season. The awards are presented annually to amateur hockey players who have best combined a level of excellence in hockey and academics.

Recipients of the the Guy-Lafleur Awards of Excellence 2005-06

Pierre-Marc Guilbault (Shawinigan Cataractes) received the 2005-06 Guy-Lafleur Excellence Award. The 20-years-old student of Shawinigan College in Natural Sciences maintained an 80% academic average. The native of Sainte-Julie recorded 63 points in 48 games with Shawinigan (15 goals, 48 assists). His sports and academics performances were recognized as the winner of the Canadian Hockey League Scholarship Player of the Year, as well as the recipient of the Marcel-Robert Trophy awarded to the QMJHL Scholarship Player of the Year.

Karl Gagné (Concordia Stingers) - 21-years-old, student in independent studies for Civil Engineering, he maintained a grade point average of 3.34 (out of 4.0). The centreman native of St-Nérée led the Stingers in scoring in his rookie season with 45 points in 30 games (22 goals, 23 assists). He was named Concordia Hockey Outstanding Rookie, and Concordia University Male Rookie of the Year. He was selected to the Ontario University Athletics All-Rookie Team, as well as the OUA Second All-Star Team.

Recipients of the Guy-Lafleur Awards of Merit 2005-06

Vincent Bourgeois (Laurentides Vikings) - 16-years-old, Grade IV student at the Sacré-Coeur Externat, he maintained a 90% academic average. The Rosemère native defenseman registered 17 points in 44 games (3 goals, 14 assists), and led his team in playoff scoring. He was named the Vikings' Academic Personnality of the Year.

Martin Nolet (Collège Champlain Cougars of Sherbrooke) - 19-years-old, student in Health Sciences at Collège Champlain, he maintained an 87% academic average. The 6'03, 205 pound defenseman native of Quebec City is currently ranked 100th overall (4th round) for the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, the only listed player of the LHJAAAQ. He recorded 12 points in 19 games with the Cougars (5 goals, 7 assists).

The program was created in 1985 to encourage sports and academics excellence for all players within the four major amateur hockey leagues in the province of Quebec; the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), the Quebec member schools of the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS), the Midget AAA Hockey League and the Junior AAA Hockey League. The winners are selected by a jury composed of representatives from the sports media and the hockey and education communities. Molson will award recipients of the Guy-Lafleur Awards of Excellence a $6,000 scholarship given out over a 3-year period, and the winners of the Guy-Lafleur Awards of Merit a $1,000 scholarship.
