Pichon Named Player of the Month

Published on July 2, 2003 under Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release

ATLANTA (Tuesday, July 2, 2003) - Philadelphia Charge forward Marinette Pichon has been selected as the WUSA's Player of the Month for the month of June by the Professional Soccer Reporters Association. Pichon lit up the competition this past month and has virtually single-handedly kept the Charge in the playoff hunt despite a 3-6-3 record. The five-foot-three Frenchwoman led the WUSA in goals (5) and points (11), and also notched one assist during the month of June.

The reigning WUSA Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year, Pichon is showing why she earned the honors last season and is proving that she is more than a one-year wonder, leading the WUSA in goals scored with 10. Pichon recorded two consecutive three-plus-point performances during five games in June (against San Diego and Boston) and hit the 20-goal mark for her career at the beginning of the month. She became the 10th player in WUSA history to reach the 50-point plateau, tying New York's Tiffeny Milbrett for the fewest games needed to reach the milestone (29 games), until Carolina's Birgit Prinz accomplished the feat later that day in only 27 matches. Pichon also had a three-game goal scoring streak, recording four goals and one assist for nine points. Pichon, fifth all-time in the WUSA in goals scored (24), is the only player in Charge history to record 10-or-more goals in two consecutive seasons.

A look at Pichon's performances during the month of June follows:

DATE PERFORMANCE

June 7 Scored one of two Charge goals in a win over San Diego, hit 20-goal mark
June 11 Held scoreless in a 0-0 draw at New York
June 14 One goal in a 2-0 win over San Diego
June 22 One goal, one assist in a 4-2 loss to Atlanta
June 28 Scored both goals in a 2-2 tie with Boston

Pichon decidedly captured WUSA Player of the Month honors, receiving 14 first place votes and one second place vote for a total of 29 points. Other contenders included San Diego's Julie Fleeting, Boston's Karina LeBlanc, Washington's Mia Hamm, New York's Shannon Boxx, Atlanta's Cindy Parlow, and San Jose's Pretinha. The WUSA's Player of the Month is selected at the end every month throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
