Piasa Face Vortex With Playoffs On The Line

February 24, 2011 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL)
Illinois Piasa News Release

Saturday night at 8:30pm The Illinois Piasa will be squaring off again with the Ohio Vortex at the SFF Arena in Pontoon Beach, IL. The biggest difference between this meeting and last is what will happen if the Piasa can take another win at the home field: Frontier Division Champions. As of today, the Illinois Piasa are 5-0 when playing in front of their home fans. If they make it 6-0 and they'll earn a spot in the PASL Playoffs as division champs on the strength of their home record.

The Vortex have been spiraling downward since their last meeting with the Piasa. Their team is now in a complete free fall with a 2-12 overall record and a -44 goal differential. They are giving up ten goals per game and only scoring 8.5. They're going to have to rely on their power play to be their saving grace if they expect to win the season series between the two teams. The Vortex currently have a 57.6% efficiency on their power play.

Where things are going so wrong for Ohio, everything is falling into place for the Piasa. They have two players in the top scorers of the PASL, Jon Fridal and Roger Gemoules. This is a very big achievement since the Frontier Division side plays four less games than the other divisions. If the Piasa make the jump to the standard divisions next year, these players could contend for the league scoring lead.

The Piasa are strong on offense at 8.5 goals per game, but even stronger on defense, giving up only 5.5 goals per game with a goal differential of +26. Coach Jerry Lakin has his team functioning well on both sides of the ball.

Kick off Saturday is at 8:30pm.
