Philadelphia Soul to hold open tryout at Temple University

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Soul, of the Arena Football League, announced the dates for their Philadelphia area open tryout. This will be the first tryout in preparations for the 2005 season. The tryouts, which are open to all athletes, will be broken up into two-day sessions based on positions.

The first session will be held on Saturday, September 18 for fullbacks, linebackers, linemen and kickers. Registration for this session will begin at Noon followed by testing and a series of drills and skill evaluations.

The second session will take place on Sunday, September 19 for quarterbacks, wide receivers, running backs and defensive backs. Registration for this session will begin at 8 a.m. with testing and individual evaluations to follow.

Athletes are required to bring turf shoes and workout attire. Absolutely no "track spikes" will be allowed on the turf.

Both tryouts will be held at Temple University's Recreational Field located on 15th Street, between Norris and Montgomery Streets. (North Philadelphia) There will be a $50 cash registration fee. Checks and credit cards will not be accepted. Money orders will be accepted. Individuals not participating in the tryout will not be allowed on the field.

"There are a number of quality college football programs with great football tradition within a three to four hours radius," said head coach Michael Trigg. "Last season we had an overwhelming turnout which produced some of the bright stars on our roster during our inaugural season."

Trigg added: "In order to better handle the response we had last year, we have separated the workout over two days so the staff can give each participant a more involved workout with more individual attention."

Over 1,300 applicants attended the Soul's first Philadelphia area open tryout last November. Eight players who participated in the tryout were signed to the Soul's roster including Most Valuable Player WR/LB Sean Scott, FB/LB Marlon Jackson and OL/DL Lance Clelland.

Season tickets for the Philadelphia Soul's sophomore season are on sale now. For more information on season tickets call 1-888-PHIL-AFL. The Soul had a record of 5-11 during their inaugural campaign. The Soul led the Arena Football League in attendance averaging over 16,866 fans per home game, including six sellouts.
