Philadelphia Soul News Release
PHILADELPHIA (February 1, 2011) - The Philadelphia Soul announce the signing of kicker Robbie Smith (5'9, 170, Western Washington) from the team's second open tryout this past weekend. Smith was among the 211 athletes who came to tryout for the Soul.
"At a tryout that had at least five kickers capable of kicking in the AFL, Robbie shined brightest," said Soul head coach Mike Hohensee. "It was one of the best performances I have ever seen by a kicker in all my years of coaching."
Smith becomes the sixth player signed from an open tryout heading into the 2011 season. The Soul signed five players - Nyere Aumaitre, Mike Gilmartin, Jerome Hayes, Matt Hewitt and Keith Stokes - from the team's first open tryout in October. Hohensee also stated that one or two more signings may come from this open tryout.
Smith, who will be entering his first AFL season, was ranked No. 1 in the North Central Conference in PAT kicking percentage (23-of-23) during the 2006 season at Western Washington. He was ranked No. 3 in field goals (14), No. 3 in field goal percentage (14-of-19), No. 4 in kick scoring (5.4 avg. per game) and No. 4 in overall scoring. Smith received honorable mention and was named a North Central Conference All-Star in 2006 while he led his team in scoring with 59 points.
The former Viking tied Western Washington's school record with a 54-yard field goal in a game against St. Cloud State (2006). He was also named Don Hansen's Football Gazette and NCC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against No. 15 Washburn on September 9, 2006, where he connected on three field goals, including a game winner with 2.7 seconds remaining.
Prior to becoming a Viking, Smith also played football at Ventura College in California (2004-05). While there, he was named Second-Team Western State Conference All-Star and earned the league's Offensive Player of the Week after making four field goals in one game.
