Philadelphia Soul News Release
JACKSONVILLE - The Philadelphia Soul (11-3), thanks to seven forced turnovers, are the 2012 East Division champions after a dominating, 62-27, win over the Jacksonville Sharks (6-7) in front of 10,206 fans at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena Saturday night.
The Soul will play in the postseason for the first time since their championship run of 2008.
"It was a tremendous victory for this organization," said Soul head coach Doug Plank. "At the beginning of the season, we set the first goal of making the playoffs. We have a way to go for our ultimate goal of winning the championship, but we took the first step tonight."
Leading the turnover parade was Soul DB Kent Richardson who tied a franchise record with three interceptions, including taking one back for a touchdown. Richardson's three picks gives him a total of 12 on the season and is one shy of tying the single-season franchise record. The Soul defense stifled the Sharks offense; forcing quarterback Bernard Morris into four interceptions and recovering three fumbles.
Soul QB Dan Raudabaugh, on the other hand was his usual efficient self, completing 14-of-24 passes for 164 yards and throwing three touchdowns - all of which went to the National Guard MVP of Week 14, WR Donovan Morgan. To go along with his three touchdowns, Morgan caught eight passes for 114 yards.
Soul FB Melik Brown led the team in rushing with three carries for 28 yards and two touchdowns.
The Soul return home Sunday, June 24 at 6:05 p.m. when they host the Pittsburgh Power in an East Division clash.
