Philadelphia, PA, January 15, 2004 - Philadelphia KiXX Vice President/General Manager Greg Bibb announced today the team has agreed to terms with forward Byron Carmichael for the remainder of the current 2003-04 campaign. The club acquired the rights to the Lumberton, NJ native in the fourth round of the 2003 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Dispersal Draft.
"Byron is a tremendous athlete who has proven to be a talented goal scorer at every level he has played," Bibb said. "He has tremendous potential and will learn the indoor game and the target position from one of the best in the business in Don D'Ambra. I'm excited to watch his development and feel he has a bright future in the MISL."
Carmichael was originally drafted by the Harrisburg Heat in the 2002 MISL Amateur Draft and by the Kansas City Wizards in the sixth round of the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft in January 2003. The Marshall University graduate was named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Player of the Year in both 2000 and 2002 and was selected to three consecutive (2000-2002) All-MAC first team squads. He finished his collegiate career atop the MAC's all-time list in goals (58) and points (128).
The 22-year old forward more recently competed with the Wilmington Hammerheads of the Pro-Select League of the United Soccer League (USL) for the 2003 campaign. With the Hammerheads, Carmichael recorded 12 points on five goals and two assists in a mere five League contests.
Carmichael, a graduate of Rancocas Valley Regional High School in Mt. Holly, NJ, is scheduled to make his professional indoor debut this Saturday, January 17 when the KiXX welcome the San Diego Sockers to the Wachovia Spectrum. The night, dubbed "Salute to All America's Heroes," is dedicated to police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, the armed services and veterans. Game-time at the Wachovia Spectrum is slated for 7:05 pm ET.
