Philadelphia Freedoms Clinch Top Seed in WTT Finals
July 29, 2018 - World TeamTennis (WTT) News Release
The Philadelphia Freedoms are headed to the World TeamTennis Finals for the first time since 2006. With their 23-19 victory over the Washington Kastles on Saturday evening in Washington DC, the Freedoms clinched the top seed and will host the WTT Finals on Sunday, August 5 at 2:00pm ET.
Taylor Townsend continued her dominance, remaining undefeated in women's singles with nine set wins in nine tries. Townsend held off a strong challenge from Naomi Osaka, 5-4, as the current world No. 17 made her WTT debut. Townsend and Raquel Atawo dominated women's doubles, 5-2, over Nicole Melichar and Madison Brengle. Townsend then teamed with Fabrice Martin in mixed doubles to close out the win in Extended Play and give the Freedoms the opportunity for their third WTT championship. Philadelphia won the WTT title in 2001 and 2006. As the top seed, Philadelphia will host the championship match in their home market and also set the order of play for the Finals.
It will be a sprint to the regular season finish on August 2 as Washington, San Diego, Springfield and Orange County remain in contention for the second spot in the Finals.
