Traverse City North Stars News Release

BOARDMAN, Ohio - The Mahoning Valley power play was too powerful for the Traverse City North Stars on Friday night at The Ice Zone in suburban Youngstown. The host Phantoms converted on four out of seven man-up chances, sparking a 5-2 win over Traverse City and keeping the Stars out of the ‘W' column in Boardman all-time.

"I'm not sure what to say other than we just didn't have it with them on the power play," said Stars head coach Scott Gardiner. "We played ‘em pretty even 5-on-5, but the whole game isn't played 5- on-5, unfortunately."

Harrison Niemann got kicked off the scoring just 1:57 into the game on assists from Mike Glaesmer and Jared Mullen, and Zach Hitch put the visitors up 2-0 seven minutes into the second stanza. Nate Urbaniak and Chris Heineman drew assists on the even-strength marker, but within three minutes of Hitch's fifth score of the season, the Phantoms had knotted the contest on rapid-fire power play lamplighters from Brent Dexter and Miles Winter to close out the scoring over the first two-thirds of the contest. The third period began much like the second ended, with Winter recording the game- winner at 2:49, followed by yet another power play goal - this one off the stick of Chris Fairbanks - at 8:38. Dustin Cloutier capped the scoring with a shorthanded empty-netter with :58 to play.

The teams combined for almost 100 shots on net, with Mahoning Valley (14-7-1) registering 47 of them and the Stars chipping in with 44. Stefan Shively made 42 saves for Traverse City, while Ryan Zapolski contributed the same number of stops for the Phantoms.

The clubs face off again on Saturday at 7 p.m., as TC looks to halt a 10-game slide. The game can be seen via live streaming video on the Internet. A link to the video site is available on the Stars web site at traversecitynorthstars.com.
