Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
BOARDMAN, Ohio (Friday, February 15, 2008) - Despite giving up three unanswered third period goals, the Mahoning Valley Phantoms were able to squeeze out a 5-4 shootout win against the Traverse City North Stars on Friday night at the Ice Zone.
After the Stars' Kyle Bonis tallied two and Kory Kaunisto notched the equalizer to overcome a 4-1 deficit with just 25 seconds left in regulation, the Phantoms' Chad Boeckman slid home the game-winning goal in the seventh round of penalty shots.
Brent Dexter got things started and put the Phantoms up 1-0 just 6:33 into the opening period. Dexter finished off a 2-on-1 with Kyle Bailey to notch his 18th goal of the season.
A mere 36 seconds later, however, the Stars' Nathan Urbaniak tied the game, picking up the rebound of a Harrison Niemann shot.
The Phantoms Nick Kenney then put the Phantoms up 2-1 just before the first intermission, deflecting home a Trent Bonnett shot from the blue line to collect his fourth goal of the season.
Although they controlled the second period with four powerplay opportunities, the Phantoms were only able to light the lamp once. Miles Winter notched his 20th of the season on the powerplay, firing a wrister over the glove of Stars' goaltender Chris Paliafito and putting the Phantoms up 3-1.
Derek Carr connected on his second goal of the season just 4:25 into the third period to push the Phantoms lead to three, before Traverse City began to rally.
The newest Phantom, defenseman Carl Nielsen chimed in with his first two points in a Mahoning Valley uniform, assisting the goals by Winter and Carr.
The Phantoms' (27-13-4, 58 points) powerplay went 1 for 9 including an unsuccessful 4-on-3 overtime opportunity. Traverse City (14-19-11, 39 points) was 1 for 6 with the man-advantage.
Garrett Bartus turned aside 38 of 42 shots to move to 18-7-3 on the year.
The same two teams rematch on Saturday night. Game time at the Ice Zone is slated for 7:15 p.m. The first 500 fans will receive a coupon for a free Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich.
