Phantoms reach midway point of camp

BOARDMAN, Ohio- After three days of the Mahoning Valley Phantoms invitational tryout camp, the good were separated from the better.

In the afternoon tilt, Team Orange # 1 and Team White # 2 played to a 5-5 tie after Jordan Sims tied the game with 1:45 remaining in regulation.

Dustin Cloutier led Team Orange with a pair of goals with Kyle Richards, Shay Cizmar and Nate Baumbick adding single tallies.

Scoring one goal each for the White were Mike Fillinger, Nickolas Rostek, Tucker Brockett, Philip Peters and Sims.

In the evening game, Scott Moser's second goal of the game with 31.7 seconds remaining gave Team White # 4 a 6-5 win over Team Orange # 3.

Alden Hirschfeld stole the puck in the left circle and quickly fired a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Garrett Bartus for a 1-0 Orange lead at 11:22 of the opening period.

Adam Woods tied the game for Team White on a two-on-one break, taking a pass from Nick Shkreli and beating Johnny Morrow with 1:49 left in the period.

Janis Purins stuffed a loose puck in front of the net 23 seconds into the second period for a 2-1 White lead. They extended their advantage at 3:58 when Moser scored off an assist from Nick Kinney.

After serving an interference penalty, Purins exited the penalty box as the puck approached him. Purins kicked the puck ahead to Dan Spuller for a two-on-one break.

Spuller's shot was by Morrow, but Trent Bonnett pounced on the rebound for a 4-1 lead at 8:11.

Team Orange matched Team White's effort with four unanswered goals of their own.

Derek Graham scored with 9:06 left in the period on assists from Alden Hirschfeld and Grant Blakey. The line struck twice more in the third period to tie the game.

Blakey scored at the 6:30 mark and Hirschfeld followed 24 seconds later woth his second of the game to tie it at 4-4.

Brian McGinty completed the comeback at 8:30 to give Team Orange a 5-4 lead.

Eric Ringel tied the game at 5-5 with 7:50 remaining on a shot from the right point before Moser scored in the final minute on a feed from Johnny Meo.

Team Orange outshot Team White 48-43. In goal, Bartus allowed one goal on 19 shots while Stefan Shively made 25 saves on 29 shots for Team White.

Morrow stopped 17 of 21 shots for Team Orange and Jordan Tibbett blocked 20 of 22 chances in relief. Both teams finished 0 for 5 on the power play.

The camp concludes with 40 players participating in the All-Star Game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The game is open to the public and admission is free.
