Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
BLAINE, MN (Wednesday, September 17th, 2008) - The Mahoning Valley Phantoms scored three unanswered goals to win their season opener over the Owatonna Express 5-4.
The Phantoms trailed 4-2 halfway through the second period before goals from Carl Nielsen, Erik Higby and Robert Harrison gave them the final margin of victory.
"We just started working harder than Owatonna," said Harrison on the comeback, "and good things happened."
Higby also opened the scoring just 2:47 into the first period, stuffing a rebound past Express goaltender Adam Buegler. It was the first of four goals the Phantoms would score off the rebound on Wednesday.
"We figured out that he was kicking out some big rebounds after my goal," says Higby, "and we were able to capitalize on that a few more times."
Christian Long also scored for the Phantoms in the first period. Goalie Garrett Bartus stopped 19 of 23 shots in the win.
The Phantoms move on to play the North Iowa Outlaws on Thursday at 7:30 PM (Eastern time).
