Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH (Monday, January 5th, 2009) - The Mahoning Valley Phantoms have started their online pre-auction of special edition Mario Lemieux Foundation game-worn jerseys.

Fans can bid early on the jerseys right now at MVPPhantoms.com by clicking on the "Bid on Special Edition Mario Lemieux Foundation Jerseys" button on the front page of the website. The link will take interested bidders to a page where they can bid on their favorite player's jersey.

The jerseys will be worn during the Phantoms' Saturday evening contest with the Motor City Machine at the Chevrolet Centre, a special Mario Lemieux Foundation night.

Following the game, there will be a live auction at the Centre for all 24 special edition jerseys plus two #66 Mario Lemieux jerseys. The uniforms will also be autographed by the players wearing them prior to the auction.

Proceeds from the jersey auction will go to benefit the Foundation and its funding of cancer research.

Any fan that cannot be in attendance for the live auction who wants to bid on a jersey will have the option of joining the bidding via telephone with a Phantoms staff member.

The jerseys' main color is white, with the Pittsburgh Penguins' signature black and gold on the sides of the torso and the Mario Lemieux Foundation logo centered on the chest.

The sleeves are white with gold-trimmed black numbers and a black "bottom" from the underarm to the wrist and a patch of gold above the wrist on "top" of the sleeve. The numbers on the back of the jersey will also be black trimmed in gold.

The Phantoms logo appears to the top left of the Foundation logo on the chest.

The Mario Lemieux Foundation was formed in 1993 by Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins who had his '93-'94 NHL season cut short when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease.

After a successful battle with Hodgkin's, the eventual NHL Hall of Famer was cancer free but his experience led him to focus on ways to assist those who were not so fortunate.

The main objective of the Mario Lemieux Foundation is to fund promising medical research projects being conducted by talented scientists.

Among the donations made by the Foundation was a five million dollar gift to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to establish the Mario Lemieux Centers for Patient Care and Research in 2001 and a two million dollar gift to the Children's Home of Pittsburgh in 2005.

Saturday's Mario Lemieux Foundation event is the second half of a two-game home series the Phantoms will play against the Motor City Machine. Friday and Saturday night's games are both scheduled for 7:15 PM starts.

The games will be broadcast locally on ESPN Radio 1240, WBBW, and worldwide at MVPPhantoms.com via B2 Networks. The pregame show will begin both nights at 7:00 PM.

Phantoms season tickets and individual game tickets are now on sale at the Phantom Box Office at the Ice Zone in Boardman. Call (330) 965-7500 for more information.
