FRISCO, TC (Monday, January 5th, 2009) - Mahoning Valley Phantoms forward Nick Kenney was named the North American Hockey League's Sherwood North Division Player of the Week on Monday.

Kenney had his best weekend of the season, scoring three goals and adding three assists in a three-game series with the second-place Traverse City North Stars. Kenney entered the weekend with only one goal and three assists on the season.

The second-year Phantom from Wixom, MI, credited the good chemistry of his new line with Jordy Trottier and Nick Shkreli for his big series. The line was assembled before Mahoning Valley's holiday series against Alpena.

"Our line really started clicking," said Kenney. "Last weekend was our first series together, so we were figuring each other out. Now we've got it and it's going really well."

Shkreli (8 G, 14 A) also had a strong weekend in Traverse City, scoring three goals with two assists to claim the Phantoms' team lead in scoring with 22 points.

Kenney was not the only Phantom honored for his performance in Traverse City; Mahoning Valley goaltender Garrett Bartus was awarded honorable mention for the GDI / NAHL Goalie of the Week following his third straight win on Saturday night in Michigan.

Bartus made 23 saves in the Phantoms' 5-3 win, improving his record to 6-4-2 this season.

It is the second consecutive week that the third-year Phantom netminder has earned honorable mention for the award.

Bartus, Kenney and the rest of the first-place Phantoms re-take the ice Friday night in a divisional matchup against the Motor City Machine at the Chevrolet Centre. The game is set for a 7:15 PM start.

The game will be broadcast locally on ESPN Radio 1240, WBBW, and worldwide at MVPPhantoms.com via B2 Networks. The pregame show will begin at 7:00 PM.

Phantoms season tickets and individual game tickets are now on sale at the Phantom Box Office at the Ice Zone in Boardman. Call (330) 965-7500 for more information.
