Penn FC News Release
TORONTO - A year after graduating from Florida Gulf Coast University, Miguel Jaime delivered Penn FC (2-3-4) its first road win of the season at Toronto FC II (0-6-2) with an 87th minute strike to earn the 1-0 result.
Down to 10 men after a red card was issued to Shaan Hundal in the 43rd minute, Toronto played deep in their defensive half to earn the draw. Kyle Venter took advantage of the space conceded by the opposition and he passed the ball from midfield to Jaime on the left wing. Jaime dribbled up the wing and lobbed a shot from 30-plus yards out. The ball drifted high and the 5-foot-10 keeper, Angelo Cavalluzzo, barely got his fingertips on the ball, but he could not make the save as the ball bounced off the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Jaime's match-winner was his first professional goal and it earned him the Man of the Match award from the Penn FC supporters.
The goal was long a time coming after Hundal's dismissal. Hundal led with his elbow in an aerial duel with Haruna Shaibu and made contact with Shaibu's head.
With the man advantage, Rush Soccer's First Team pressed offensively to break the stalemate. The team shot 15 times and earned four corners in the second half. Penn FC nearly broke through in the 58th minute after Tommy Heinemann was fouled in the box during a corner kick attempt. The newly-minted USL Player of the Week -- sporting the captain's armband for the first time this season -- played a low driving penalty kick towards the right post. Cavalluzzo made the right read and got his left hand on the ball just in time to make the save.
Sean Lewis earned his second clean sheet in three starts as the Penn FC backline held Toronto to two shots with zero on goal. Harri Hawkins was active in the defense and midfield -- winning 11-12 duels and completing 68 passes. Hawkins' performance earned the USL's Man of the Match award.
The victory at Toronto marked the Blue and White's second win in three matches. The team earned six crucial points during its stretch of three matches in six days, despite significantly changing up its lineup for all three contests. The fluidity of the team's formations and depth will prove useful as it prepares for its first match in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup match one week from Wednesday.
Penn FC earned a well-deserved break and will resume league duties when it heads to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday, May 26 for 2018's second iteration of the Keystone Derby. Before the match at Pittsburgh, Penn FC will face the winner of FC Motown and New York Red Bulls U23 on Wednesday, May 16.
