Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' AHL-season best nine-game road winning streak was ended in a 7-4 loss to the Binghamton Senators on Saturday at the Broome County Veterans Memorial.
Trailing 2-1 as the second period began, the Senators evened the score after a turnover at the blueline resulted in Jack Downing being left alone in front of the Penguins net with three chances to finally whack the puck past Brad Thiessen at 1:48.
Binghamton then went to work on the man-advantage to go ahead by two. Mike Hoffman stuffed in a power play goal at 5:47 and Andre Petersson sent a wrist shot inside the far post five minutes later to complete a run of four straight goals for the Senators.
Bryan Lerg got Wilkes-Barre/Scranton back within one, putting a backhand shot to the top of the net at 13:12 of the second. Eric Tangradi then pounced on a failed clearing attempt that landed in the slot and beat Mike McKenna over the blocker to knot the game, 4-4, four minutes before the intermission.
A penalty shot would prove to be deciding tally after David Dziurzynski was granted the free chance with 31.1 seconds left in the second. The Senators forward's wrister to the stick side of Thiessen allowed his team to go ahead for good, 5-4.
The Penguins struck 3:58 into the game as Colin McDonald won a puck battle along the right boards and found Ben Street at the faceoff dot for a quick shot to corner of the net.
The power play unit lifted Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to a 2-0 lead at 6:38 when Geoff Walker knocked in a rebound for his 12th of the season.
Skating 5-on-4 later in the first, Binghamton needed only 11 seconds to convert with Stephane DaCosta sending a backdoor pass that Corey Locke one-timed past the glove of Thiessen.
Petersson and Dziurzysnki each added goals in the third period as Scott Munroe replaced Thiessen for the final 20 minutes of regulation. Thiessen suffered the loss with eight saves on 13 shots.
The American Hockey League's 2012 AHL All-Star Classic will take place Sunday and Monday, Jan. 29 and 30, in Atlantic City, N.J. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins return to play on Friday, February 3 to battle the Hershey Bears at 7:05PM. For tickets and more information, call (570) 208-PENS or visit www.wbspenguins.com.
