South Georgia Peanuts News Release
The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, took the first game of a four-game set with the Aiken Foxhounds. The Peanuts won 6-5 on Monday night as Jasha Balcom picked up three hits including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth.
The Peanuts got on the board early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Balcom and Joey Hooft led the inning off with singles before they each advanced an extra base on a wild pitch. Mike Caruso then singled to score both Balcom and Hooft. With one out, Kyle Keen singled to put runners at the corners and then Caruso scored on a Brandon Woolard sacrifice fly.
The Peanuts added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Caruso and Nick Prosise led the inning off with hits that put runners on the corners. Keen then grounded into a double-play but it did score a run to make it a 4-0 game.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Peanuts once again put a run across. With two outs, Shannon Wirth walked and then advanced to third on a Balcom single. The Peanuts then put Balcom in motion from first, which allowed Wirth to score from third on the throw down to second.
With the Peanuts leading 5-0, the Foxhounds tied it up in the top of the eighth inning. Two Peanuts errors helped lead to the runs as three of the five runs were unearned.
In the bottom of the eighth, Johnny Washington was hit by a pitch with one out and then stole second base. With two outs, Balcom came through with an RBI single to give the Peanuts the lead. Mike Colacchio pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.
Wirth had a great start for the second consecutive time. Wirth went 7.1 innings allowing 2 unearned runs on seven hits. Drew Shetrone picked up the win after pitching .2 innings and allowing one unearned run.
Balcom led the team at the plate going 3-5 with one run and one RBI. Caruso went 2-3 with two runs and two RBI while Keen went 2-4 with an RBI. In all, the Peanuts picked up 11 hits on the night.
