Peanuts Sign Pitching Trio

South Georgia Peanuts News Release


The South Georgia Peanuts professional baseball club, presented by Security Bank, has announced the signings of three right-handed pitchers. Jason Blanton, Shannon Wirth and Austin Weilep have all agreed to terms with the team bringing the total number of active players on the roster to 26.

Blanton was drafted in the 12th round of the 2001 draft by the Cubs after posting a 5-1 record with a 4.44 ERA in his only season at North Carolina State. During the 2001 professional season, he moved through three levels of Class-A baseball finishing the season at High-A Daytona. In 2002, he spent the entire year at Daytona finishing with a 2.29 ERA. In 2003, Blanton pitched only 6.2 innings for the Arizona Cubs, which would be his last appearance in affiliated baseball. After not pitching at all in 2004, he reappeared in independent baseball in 2005 for the Nashua Pride. Last season he split time between Nashua and the Long Island Ducks. He has a career record of 13-8 with five saves and a 3.48 ERA.

Weilep and Wirth were teammates last season with Low-A Spokane. Weilep spent the entire 2006 season in Spokane finishing with a 3-2 record with two saves and a 4.67 ERA. Wirth spent time with three separate teams in the Rangers organization finishing the season out at High-A Bakersfield. Overall, he finished with a 2-4 record with two saves and a 6.16 ERA. Both players were released by the Rangers organization this past march during spring training.

The Peanuts will begin to report to Albany the first week of May. Spring training will begin on May 8th.
