Peanuts Prepare For Championship Series

August 30, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release

The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, took the field for the final time before the South Coast League championship series begins. The Peanuts held a practice at Paul Eames Park on Thursday afternoon for the final preparations for a series where the goal will be a professional sports championship for the first time in the history of Albany, Georgia.

While it was obvious that the Peanuts are very focused going into the championship series, the entire team seemed very relaxed Thursday afternoon. The hitters all took batting practice while a number of hitters faced live pitching from injured pitcher Derek Duclos.

"It was definitely a big focus day today," closer Drew Shetrone said. "At the same time we were out here having fun. It is one of the last days on this field so you have to take it back and forth to be focused but also have a good time."

The Macon Music hold a 10-7 advantage over the Peanuts during the regular season. Despite that, the Peanuts are very confident going into the three-game championship series.

"We are very confident right now," catcher Nick Prosise said. "It starts with the manager and goes down through the team."

The Peanuts plan on starting Dumas Garcia and Jerome Gamble in games one and two, respectively, against Macon. Garcia and Gamble represent two of the best pitchers in the South Coast League, with both of them expected to be playing in affiliated organizations next season.

"I think we are confident. We are going to play our style of game the way we played it earlier in the year," manager Wally Backman said. "We will be a little more aggressive on the bases and those types of things. I am confident with the guys we are throwing out there pitching for sure."

A championship victory for South Georgia would represent the first professional championship in the history of sports in Albany. With the team knowing that they can be part of something special in this first season of the South Coast League, the bottom line is everyone is excited for the first pitch Friday night in Macon.

"This is the second time I have ever played for a championship and I am starting to get some little butterflies," Prosise said. "I am getting anxious and excited and want to get out there playing."

The Peanuts and Music will play game one in Macon Friday night at 7:10. The two teams return to South Georgia for game two on Saturday and game three, if needed, on Sunday. First pitch for the games in Albany are scheduled for 7:10. Tickets are available by logging onto southgeorgiapeanuts.com or visiting the Peanuts box office at Paul Eames Park.
