South Georgia Peanuts News Release
The South Georgia Peanuts Professional Baseball Club, presented by Security Bank, took the field for the first time in the team's history when they played an exhibition against the Macon Music on Friday night. While the game might not have mattered in the standings, the night was historic in the sense that it was the first ever South Coast League action, the first time professional baseball had been played in Albany since 2002 and the first time Wally Backman managed a game since 2004.
The final result had both the Peanuts and Music going home to their beds without a win or a loss as late inning heroics from each team caused for a 7-7 tie. The Peanuts spent a large portion of the game in the lead. One of the biggest hits of the night came off the bat of Doc Brooks who hit a bases-loaded double in the fifth inning. Two runs scored to give the Peanuts a one-run lead but Steve Garrabrants was thrown out at the plate.
The Peanuts were leading by a score of 5-4 going into the top of the ninth inning but Macon was able to plate three runs to take a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth. A combination of walks and singles led to the Peanuts scoring two runs in their portion of the ninth to cause for the tie. The bases were loaded for much of the inning but the Peanuts were unable to come up with the big hit to win the game.
The main purpose of the game was to help prepare both the Peanuts and Music for the upcoming regular season. After the game, Backman seemed to be happy with the evening.
"I was happy with the day, we made some mistakes that we will talk about in the clubhouse," Backman said. "We had so many opportunities today that in a normal day I would have been hitting and running and where I am going to steal a lot more bases. We had an opportunity today to hands down blow that game open but I told you that I wasn't going to do that and I didn't."
Over 250 people witnessed the historic night at Paul Eames Park. While the game was just a shell of the presentation that the team will be putting on during the regular season, the fans were into the ballgame especially during the late inning dramatics.
"I am so glad that they came out," Backman said. "We are going to be exciting; they are going to love the team we put on the field. The team we just played might be one of the better teams in the league and I am happy and satisfied with what I know to be pretty close to the 23 guys I am going to have."
The Peanuts continue spring training on Saturday. Spring practice will break on May 17th as the team heads to Charlotte County for opening day with the RedFish on May 18th. The Peanuts home opener is scheduled for May 24th also against the RedFish. Peanuts tickets are currently on sale by contacting the team office at (229) 435-8900!
