In their two seasons in the PBL, the Buffalo Stampede have lost 22 games in a row, a PBL record. In an effort to stop that inglorious streak, the Stampede made their first trip to Maryland on Saturday, for a road game against the GreenHawks. Racing off to a 33-30 first quarter lead, the Stampede never looked back, and finished with a 124-114 triumph over Maryland for Buffalo's first win of the year. Derick Payne led the Orange and Black with 25 points and 6rebounds, while new addition Cameron Stanley helped Buffalo with 21 points, 6 rebounds, and a 4-for-6 completion ratio from behind the 3-point line. Andy Robinson put 24 points on the board; he also had two steals, while Markus Price dished out a team-high 9 assists to go with his 19 points.

After last week's grueling road trip, the Manchester Millrats enjoyed a two-game weekend homestand. Saturday night saw the return of the Rochester Razorsharks, whom the Millrats played in a highly contested playoff series last year. The intensity between the two teams was white-hot intense, and four quarters of basketball couldn't produce a winner. Both teams were tied 112-112, and it took an overtime period to eventually give the Millrats their first home loss of the season, and third straight loss, 130-117. Eric Gilchrese and Al Stewart both came off the bench to lead Manchester with 21 points apiece; Anthony Anderson added 20 points with four 3-pointers in his arsenal. Newly-acquired Luke Bonner had eight rebounds in the contest.
In Bonner's second game as a Millrat, Manchester dominated the Quebec Kebs on Sunday evening, taking a 121-94 victory. Bonner, who also had 16 points on the night, pulled down 20 boards, the most rebounds ever generated by a Manchester Millrat in a single game (eclipsing Kenyon Gamble's 15 boards in a February 2009 game against Chicago). Eric Gilchrese was the top scorer for the Millrats this evening, with 26 points, while Alexus Foyle put 18 points on the scoreboard.

Thomas S. Wootton High School became the home venue for the Maryland GreenHawks, as they faced the Buffalo Stampede for the second time this year. Although the GreenHawks charged off with a 5-0 start, Maryland quickly lost the lead and played catch-up for the rest of the night, and lost 124-114 to the Buffalo Stampede. Team Green got a boost off the bench from the newly acquired Derrick Mercer, who came through with a huge 3-pointer "and-1" play in the 1st quarter, and finished with 22 points, including 7-7 shooting from the free throw line. Maryland's Scooter Sherrill led all GreenHawks in scoring with 29 points and 11-11 from the free throw line.

Four games in the PBL, four wins. Now the Puerto Rico Capitanes had to face the Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry, who were also unbeaten, at the Capitanes' Arecibo home. And for the first three quarters, Lawton threatened to give the Capitanes their first loss of the season. But with ten minutes left in the game, Puerto Rico scored 11 straight points, with Larry Ayuso draining three-pointers left and right. Puerto Rico took their first lead of the game on a Jeff Aubry tip-in with 2:50 left in the match - then the Capitanes continued to score at will, finishing with a 101-94 victory over the Cavalry. Larry Ayuso's 30 team-leading points were augmented by nine 3-pointers, while David Cortes added 22 points and Walter Hodge scored 12.

Last year, the Manchester Millrats took the Rochester Razorsharks to the brink of playoff elimination, before the Razorsharks prevailed. This time, the teams met in a regular-season contest on Saturday night at Southern New Hampshire University. For Rochester forward Keith Friel, it was a homecoming, as he played his high school ball in the Granite State. Friel put on a 3-point shoting clinic, hitting 7-for-11 from beyond the arc and a team-leading 31 points in Rochester's 130-117 overtime win against Manchester. Eric Walton added 23 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double; while Xavier Morton (12 pts) and Lincoln Glass (12 pts) also had double-figure scoring for the Sharks.

The Vermont Frost Heaves took the long trip up to Nova Scotia for a game against the Halifax Rainmen, a Saturday night contest that the Blue and White hoped would change their fortunes and end their early-season slump. Although the Frost Heaves fell behind by 16 points in the first quarter, they battled back, punctuated by Mike Hall's "four score" half-court basket to close out the second quarter, only down 59-57. Vermont actually led the game in the fourth quarter, taking a 5-point lead with 3 minutes left. But in the end, the Rainmen took the win 119-109. Juwan Bailey led all Frost Heaves with 23 points, followed by Troy Jackson with 19, and Matt Hall and Marshall Brown contributed 12 each.
PBL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jan 17 - Derick Payne, Buffalo Stampede
The Premier Basketball League is pleased to announce that Derick Payne, a 6'6" 220-pound power forward from Bowie State University, has been named PBL Player of the Week for the week ending January 17, 2010. This is the first time Payne has been honored for his achievements, and the first time a member of the Buffalo Stampede has earned this award since Tyrone Rayson in March 2009.
In a road victory against the Maryland GreenHawks, Payne earned 25 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, and helped spark the Stampede to a 124-114 road win, thus ending the franchise's 22-game PBL-record losing streak.
This is Payne's second season with the Buffalo Stampede and third year as a player in the PBL; he previously suited up for the Maryland Nighthawks in the 2007-08 season.
PBL "FOUR SCORE" HALFCOURT BASKETS
A "Four Score" shot occurs when a player completes a successful field goal from beyond halfcourt. The team receives four points for such a basket, while, for statistical purposes, the player is credited with two completed two-point field goals. A list of all successful "Four Scores" for the 2009-10 season are listed below.
1/16/10, Matt Hall, Vermont at Halifax (2nd quarter)
