Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
CHICAGO - Dubuque Fighting Saints goaltender Paxton Geisel, among the USHL's top goaltenders all season long, was named to the USHL All-Rookie First Team. The 18-year-old goaltender was a consistent presence in the crease for the Saints. His first season in the USHL outclassed all rookies in his position category, making him a shoo-in for the honorific.
"We're happy for Paxton to get this honor from the league after he played well for us this past season in net," said GM and President of Hockey Ops Kalle Larsson. "We're excited for his future with our club and his future down the line."
Geisel, 18, was not only a standout among rookies, but also a standout among his veteran peers. His 25 wins finished third-most in the league, and his .897 save percentage ranked seventh-best in the league as well. His two shutouts ranked third-most in the league. To top it off, he finished with the most shootout wins in the league (3). Geisel finished the year with a 25-9-3/3.13/.897 split in his opening season as a Dubuque Fighting Saint.
"It's a huge honor to be recognized by the league, but it wouldn't be possible without my teammates, coaches and staff members within the organization," Geisel said. "They all made my job a lot easier throughout the season and I couldn't be more grateful for the efforts they put in to help bring the team success."
The Denver commit finished the season among the top North American goaltending prospects. His stock rose from 29th at the midterm to 19th among North American goalies according to the final NHL Central Scouting list. Geisel took to the net in the 2022 BioSteel All-American Game, where he made 17 saves on 18 shots in Team Blue's overtime victory, including several spectacular saves in the extra session.
The Saskatchewanian earned his first USHL win in his first USHL start on September 24 against the Omaha Lancers. His first shutout came against the rival Waterloo Black Hawks on December 29.
Geisel joined the Fighting Saints from the St. Cloud Norsemen of the NAHL. He finished his first season in "The Naw" with a 14-22-0/3.37/.892 split, and as an All-Central Division Rookie Team selection. He was drafted by the Fighting Saints in round four of the 2020 USHL Phase I Draft out of the Dallas Starts Elite AAA program.
