
Patterson, Smith Earn Honors

Jackson 3B Derek Patterson and Coastal Bend right-hander Mike "Texas" Smith were named the Daktronics Central League Players of the Week on Monday for the period ending June 15.
Patterson won the award in the first six games in which he played for Jackson. He signed with the Senators last week after San Angelo released him on May 28. Patterson went 11-for-23 (.478) with six runs, four extra-base hits, nine RBIs, two stolen bases, a .586 on-base percentage and a .783 slugging percentage in the week ending Sunday. He was 9-for-55 (.164) for San Angelo in 16 games from May 8 to May 24.
Patterson, 25 played for the Greenville Bluesmen of the Texas-Louisiana League in 2001 and was sold to the Milwaukee Brewers for the 2002 season. He played for the Brewers Arizona League team and Single-A High Desert Mavericks before being released in the off season.

Smith, 39, threw a seven-inning complete game shutout in game one of a doubleheader versus San Angelo on June 13. He one-hit the Colts, allowing two walks and striking out five.
Smith pitched 26 1/3 innings in parts of three seasons in the major leagues with Cincinnati and Baltimore. He began his professional career in 1984 with the Reds affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. He has played in the Central League (formerly the Texas-Louisiana League) with four teams since 1998.
