KALAMAZOO, MI - Derek Patrosso scored twice and Nick Lindberg added a goal and an assist on Wednesday to key the Port Huron Icehawks to a 3-2 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings in front of 5,004 fans on Education Day at Wings Stadium.
With the win, the Icehawks improve to 32-16-5-1 with 70 points in the International Hockey League standings and take back sole possession of first place, at least for now. The Muskegon Lumberjacks could regain a share of first with a win Wednesday night at Fort Wayne.
The Icehawks outshot the K-Wings 29-14 through the first two periods of play and skated to a 2-0 lead. Lindberg kicked things off late in the first and scored on a pass from Jamie Carroll at 17:17. Early in the second period, the Icehawks made it a two goal game when Patrosso fired a shot past K-Wings goalie Joel Martin at 3:50. He was assisted by Lindberg and Jamie Lovell.
The K-Wings made a comeback in the third period and tied the game with a power play goal by Rick Cleaver and a shorthanded tally by Lucas Drake. The rally attempt was short lived, however, as Patrosso scored his second of the game on the power play at 11:00 to put the Icehawks back on top. Daniel Tetrault and Ian Turner were credited with the assists.
The Icehawks outshot the K-Wings 35-21 in the victory. Icehawks goaltender Larry Sterling made 19 saves for his 21st win of the season. Martin had 32 saves. Port Huron was 1-5 on the power play and Kalamazoo was 1-6.
