PASL Weekly - Week Thirteen

January 20, 2009 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release

Cincinnati Half Perfect

1790 undefeated at midway point

1/20/09 - Behind the league's best defense anchored by goalkeeper Craig Salvati, 1790 Cincinnati has breezed through the first half of their schedule with an 8-0 record. Their record runs to 10-0 when you factor in their two US Open wins.

This weekend they made believers out of Denver and Colorado, sweeping a two-day roadtrip 7-1, and 7-3, respectively.

Despite a considerably light schedule, they can truly lay claim to the number one spot in the PASL-Pro for at least one week.

The second half schedule is not as kind. Five of their eight games will be on the road and they will face Stockton and Saskatoon and have three games against St. Louis.

PASL-Pro League Action

Besides 1790's weekend sweep, there was only one additional league game. The Detroit Waza got a nice 11-6 home win over the West Virginia Quantum Force. The 3-8 Waza have little hope of surpassing Cincinnati to wrest a playoff spot, but with five remaining games -- all at home -- they are in prime position to play the role of spoilers.

KICK STARTERS - Conversations you should be having about the PASL-Pro

Greg Howes, Tacoma Stars

The indoor superstar-turned-coach scored four goals including the game winner in overtime to beat the Wenatchee Fire 10-9 in US Open play. The PASL-Premier Stars will now host Denver on January 25. A win will put Howes and Tacoma in a semifinal battle against Stockton, who owns his PASL-Pro rights.

US Open

Tacoma advanced and so did Detroit. Waza's win over West Virginia had double consequences and set them up for a quarterfinal dual against Cincinnati. St. Louis and Kansas City (PASL-Premier) make up the third quarterfinal bracket and Stockton is waiting in the semifinals having already won their quarterfinal against San Diego.

1790 Power Play

Craig Rhodis, player/coach of 1790, has been a driving force for an offense that's averaging 10 goals per game. In a model of efficiency, the 1790 power play went a perfect 6-6 this weekend.

Liga Mexicana de Futbol Rapido

The LMFR released its schedule and lineup of teams this week. Ten teams will compete in two divisions. The winner of the Central Division and Baja Division will each go to Stockton to compete in the PASL-Pro Championship Weekend, March 13-15 in Stockton, California.

The Week Ahead

The marquee matchup of the week is Stockton at St. Louis on Friday. The Illusion will have its full arsenal at its disposal against the Western Division's top team. Stockton has only played two road games, both in Wenatchee, so this is a colossal matchup.

As far as playoff implications go, Friday is a big day for Saskatoon and Calgary. The two teams are each within two games of first place Edmonton and a doubleheader awaits them in Saskatoon.
