PASL-Pro Weekly - Week 9
Published on January 12, 2011 under Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release
Attendance Ticking Up Across the League
1/12/11 - At the approximate midpoint of the PASL-Pro's third season a positive attendance trend is emerging throughout the league. Five of the six returning US teams are up over last year's final averages and the one team that is down slightly just set a single game franchise best in attendance this weekend.
Leading the surge are the San Diego Sockers and Cincinnati Kings. The Sockers are up 47% to 2,503 per game and have hosted the 4th and 7th best crowds in league history this season. The buzz surrounding the Sockers is growing thanks to a winning tradition and the job mainstream media figures John Kentera and Craig Elsten are doing in raising the level of awareness about the Sockers return.
The Kings are up a fantastic 103% in their first season at Cincinnati Gardens. Cincinnati was 6th in attendance last year, but has jumped to second place this year at 1,164 per game.
Already this season San Diego, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Detroit have set franchise highs in single game attendance and the league's overall average of 799 is up 18% over last year's 675.
Player of the Week
Kraig Chiles, San Diego Sockers
Chiles continued his MVP candidacy with three goals against the Kings in a dominant 10-4 win including the eventual game-winner. The 26 year old forward, who played in MLS with Chivas, burst onto the PASL-Pro scene last year and scored 28 goals. This year Chiles already has 18 goals and has doubled last year's assist total to eight. He currently ranks second in goals and points to Ohio's Allen Eller.
Kick Starters - Conversations you should be having about the PASL-Pro
The Swagger is Back
The PASL-Pro's all-time leading scorer made an unexpected and successful return to the league by signing with his former team's biggest rival. The former California Cougar signed a free agent deal with the Sockers prompting angry Cougar fans to compare him to LeBron James. Farber won a championship with the Cougars in 2008-09 and also took home the MVP trophy for that season. In his Sockers debut the super-speedy midfielder made a solid contribution with a goal and two assists.
I'm Not the Same Without Hughes
The Kings put their best foot forward in San Diego, but they were missing their best-footed forward Jeff Hughes, who was in Florida getting his coaching license. Cincinnati got off to an explosive start with four goals in the first quarter, but went scoreless over the last three quarters. Kwame Sarkodie picked up the offensive slack in California the next day with four goals and two assists in the Kings 8-4 win.
Detroit Can Count on Him
Costea "The Count" Decu has been an important addition to the Detroit Waza this season not only leading the team with 16 points, but scoring clutch goals like Saturday's overtime game-winner in their 11-10 win at Ohio. The Romanian Decu, 39, has also played indoors for the Detroit Rockers and Chicago Storm.
