PASL-Pro Announces Torneo Internacional de Futbol Rapido Monterrey 2008

October 15, 2008 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release

The Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro) announced the participation of the United States National Arena Soccer Team (USNAST) in the Torneo Internacional de Futbol Rapido Monterrey 2008. The tournament, the second event sanctioned by the Federacion Internacional de Futbol Rapido (FIFRA), will take place from November 5-9 at Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico.

The US will be rematched with Mexico, who won their first meeting 6-4 in the Circuito Mundial in Montreal in July, and will face Brazil and Peru for the first time.

The tournament, expected to become an annual event, was organized by the Federacion Nacional de Futbol Rapido (FNFR) and the Monterrey La Raza. Arena Monterrey is the home of La Raza and several La Raza players, including Genoni Martinez, lead Mexico to first place in the Circuito Mundial with victories over the US and Canada.

FIFRA President Sergio del Rio explained that this event, like the one in Montreal, is one of several that FIFRA plans to stage on an ongoing basis. Possible future tournaments could be held in places like Brazil and Dubai.

"We are excited about our second event, and especially having it in Monterrey," said PASL Commissioner and FIFRA Vice President Kevin Milliken. "We expect big crowds and the enthusiasm from the Mexican fans. This will be a great experience for everyone."

USNAST Head Coach Bernie Lilavois will select players from a pool of 26 players culled from combines held in Las Vegas, Cincinnati, and Ft. Collins, CO. Additional players will be considered following upcoming tryouts October 18 in Cedar Park, TX and Glen Carbon, IL, as well as October 19 in Wenatchee, WA.

"This is a really exciting time for our sport," said Lilavois. "A lot of guys are going to get their first taste of international play and it's going to help them grow as players."

The preliminary schedule features round robin play on Wednesday November 5 and Thursday November 6, a day off on Friday November 7, and a final day of round robin games on Saturday November 8. The consolation game matching the 3rd and 4th place teams will precede the championship game, featuring the 1st and 2nd place teams, on Sunday November 9.

Team rosters and the final schedule of games will be announced in the next week.
