Pappas Named MISL Goalkeeper of the Year

Philadelphia, PA, May 5, 2005 â The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today that Philadelphia KiXX goalkeeper Peter Pappas has been selected as the 2004-2005 MISL Goalkeeper of the Year. The native of Toronto, Ontario was selected following a week-long balloting process that polled media and team personnel from throughout the seven-team League. Voters were asked to cast a first-place vote (worth five points), a second-place vote (three points), and a third place vote (one point) for eligible MISL newcomers. Pappas, who was also named the MISL Goalkeeper of the Year for his play last season, appeared on nearly 94 percent of the submitted ballots.
"Although this is an individual award," Pappas said, "to be Goalkeeper of the Year the team in front has to play well and the right way. Despite a lot of new faces, we did a great job playing together with team defensive soccer. My success is a product of the team's success."
Pappas received his seventh All-League selection after posting a 19-15 overall record and finishing among the leaders in nearly every goalkeeping category including second in goals against average (4.34), minutes played (2,086), saves (449), and save percentage (.748). The Philadelphia University product was third in wins (19). With the selection, Pappas joined teammates Pat Morris and Don D'Ambra on the ALL-MISL First Team, which was announced on April 28. In addition to his two MISL Goalkeeper of the Month (January and April) honors, the seven-time all-star also received six Goalkeeper of the Week accolades, the most among all netminders this season, for the seven-day periods ending November 22, December 19, January 10, January 31, April 10 and April 24. Overall in his career, the nine-year veteran has now received Player of the Week honors 22 times and 10 Player of the Month honors.
The 32-year-old netminder also registered the 4,000th save of his illustrious career in Baltimore on January 21 and then appeared in his 300th career contest versus St. Louis on January 29. Pappas posted a 7-6 double overtime victory, playing a career-high 81 minutes and 49 seconds, versus Cleveland on February 5. The contest was the second longest in franchise history and marked only the second time the team was forced to double overtime in a regular-season game in their nine years of existence.
"Peter has proven to be a model of consistency in goal for the Philadelphia KiXX," KiXX Executive Vice President/General Manager Greg Bibb stated. The accolade gives the KiXX a clean sweep in the three major League awards announced this week; the MISL announced that KiXX forward John Barry Nusum was selected as the 2004-05 Rookie of the Year on Tuesday, May 3 and that Morris was named the Defender of the Year on Wednesday, May 4. Nusum was also named to the All-Rookie Team with teammate Chris Fehrle.
The Philadelphia KiXX are a member of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), a single-entity organization that features a coast-to-coast presence across the United States. The club is currently in the midst of its ninth season of play in 2004-05 at the Wachovia Spectrum located in Philadelphia, PA. The team also operates the Philadelphia KiXX Summer Kamp program, which is offered to boys and girls, ages four to 18, throughout the Tri-State area.
