Panther City Lacrosse Club Loses to San Diego
January 9, 2022 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Panther City Lacrosse Club News Release
The Panther City Lacrosse Club (0-4) lost to the San Diego Seals (3-1), 15 - 12, at Pechanga Arena in San Diego, Saturday night.
Veteran forward Phil Caputo continued his offensive barrage for Panther City with a team-leading four goals, giving him nine on the season and at least one goal in all four Panther City games. Forward Mike Triolo and rookie forwards Patrick Dodds and Nathan Grenon both added two goals, but it wasn't enough to overcome the San Diego attack led by forward Dane Dobbie, who added to his NLL goal lead with five goals.
Transition player Jeremy Thompson dominated the faceoff circle, winning 19 of his 31 faceoffs, as well as claiming a team-high eight loose balls.
Panther City next heads to New York to face the New York Riptide (0-3) on Saturday, January 15. Faceoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT at Nassau Live Center.
Panther City Lacrosse Club Head Coach Tracey Kelusky
On the defense rebounding in the second half...
"We made adjustments of what we needed to do. We played from the inside out. Exactly what we talked about. We played physical. We were denying them space to go set picks. I thought early in the first half we weren't doing that very well. We were letting them run around and bumping our guys and putting us off kilter. I thought we did a way better job of directing and us playing our defensive system."
On goalie Nick Damude starting on short notice and his play in the second half...
"He made some adjustments as well. He is an unorthodox goalie in the way he plays. He is on his line. It was tough for him to come in - not because he wasn't prepared. Obviously short notice with [Orleman out], but he cares about Orley. He cares about his teammates. Maybe puts some pressure on himself as well, but he settled in in the second half for sure. He made adjustments, stepped up his line and made some real good stops."
On settling the team as they ride the highs and the lows during a game...
"We have to trust the process. What I said to the guys after the game - we have to almost dot every 'I' and cross every 't'. Our process is more critical than anything else. That is how we have to operate. We have to trust what Toller [Defensive Coach Steve Toll] is saying on the back end and then obviously what Teater [Offensive Coach Dan Teat] is saying on the front side. Attention to detail has to be way better."
On emphasizing the attention to detail and the importance of it...
"It boils down to accountability. Being accountable to your teammates. 'My bad' doesn't work. 'I'm sorry' or 'that was my fault' - well then fix it. If you can't fix it then unfortunately, we have to find somebody that will. We are going to fix it. I just want to see a little more of us having that snarl back and when adversity does happen - punch back. Maybe we are not believing in ourselves the way we should, but we will get there. No one likes to be 0-4. We are going to punch back. I can promise that."
