Chillicothe Paints News Release
BUTLER, Pa. - The Chillicothe Paints (2-2), presented by Adena Health System, led most of the night before dropping their first road game of the season, a 5-2 loss to the Butler BlueSox (2-3) at Kelly Automotive Park Monday.
Butler struck first on Kellen Sarver's RBI fielder's choice that plated Andrew Chuba in the bottom of the first.
Chillicothe's Cole Heavilin doubled to lead off the third. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Heavilin scored on a Ben Beachy single to right field, tying the game at one.
The Paints took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Michael Ryan reached with a one-out single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out RBI triple by Gama Martinez. That lead would hold up until the eighth.
Still under the 80 pitch mark, Paints' starter Chris Modrzynski went back to the mound to start the eighth having retired 13 consecutive Butler hitters. Ray Scala ended that streak with a leadoff single to right field, just beyond the outstretched glove of Heavilin, the Paints' second baseman. After a Chuba single, Nick Mancuso sacrificed the runners to second and third with one out. Grant Hannant singled past the drawn-in shortstop to drive home Scala and tie the game at two.
Following a pitching change that brought Zach Mehelich into the game for the Paints and the second out of the inning, Colton Carney tripled to center field, driving in two more Butler runs, then scored on the play himself thanks to a Chillicothe throwing error, putting the BlueSox up for good at 5-2 through eight innings.
Beachy, Ryan, Martinez and Chad Roberts each went one-for-four at the plate. Heavilin and Justin Fugitt both went one-for-three. Beachy and Martinez each drove in a run for Chillicothe.
Mrdrzynski (0-1), the Paints' starter, took the loss after tossing 7 1/3 innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out five.
Butler's Jarod Deagan (1-0) earned the win after three shutout innings of relief, striking out five in the process. Wyatt Daugherty pitched a perfect ninth to get the save for the BlueSox.
The Paints and BlueSox meet again Tuesday night in Butler, it's a 7:05 p.m. first pitch at Kelly Automotive Park. Taylor Perrett is slated to start for Chillicothe, while Butler's scheduled starter is Jake Stout.
