SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by Adena Health System, scored three runs in the first inning en route to an 8-2 win against the Champion City Kings at Springfield's Carleton Davidson Stadium Monday night.
Cody Orr led the game off with a hit and scored on Chris Eisel's double down the left-field line. Two batters later, Cole Andrews hit a two-run home run to left field, giving the Paints an early 3-0 lead. It was Andrews' 10th home run of the season.
Champion City (23-28) scored a run in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1.
The Paints (34-28) added a run. Joe Laudont walked and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Kings' pitcher trying to pickoff to first. Laudont moved to third on Parker Murdie's single to centerfield and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cody Orr, giving the Paints a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Gavin Homer was hit by a pitch to start the inning, stole second base and scored on a double by Trey Smith. Ethan Hajdukovic was intentionally walked and then Smith stole second third. Laudont signled, scoring Smith. Murdie walked to load the bases. After a pitching change, Orr struck out on a wild pitch, allowing him to advance to first and scoring Hajdukovic, giving the Paints a 7-1 lead.
Chillicothe made it 8-1 in the seventh. Homer led off with a walk, went to second on a single by Andrews, stole third and scored when Smith grounded into a double play.
The Kings plated a run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Paints took the win 8-2.
Ross Thompson (1-0) earned his first win of the season after throwing 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Thompson allowed just two hits, walking one and striking out two.
The win is Chillicothe's eighth this season against Champion City, meaning the Paints win the 15-game season series.
Chillicothe and Champion City play each other for the final time this season Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m.
