Chillicothe Paints News Release
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by Adena Health System, were 0-13 this season when trailing after seven innings, but not anymore. The Paints trailed 4-0 and 6-4, but completed the comeback to beat the REX at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute Sunday evening.
The REX (28-22) took an early 3-0 lead, scoring on two errors and a two-run home run by Austin Weiler in the bottom of the first inning. Weiler homered again in the third inning, giving the REX a 4-0 lead.
Chillicothe (33-18) finally broke through in the top of the fourth inning. Cody Orr singled to leadoff the inning and, after an out, advanced to second on a single by Gavin Homer. Cole Andrews doubled to right field, scoring Orr to put the Paints on the board. Trey Smith was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Ethan Hajdukovic walked to plate Homer. Justin McIntyre singled to left, scoring Andrews and Smith, tying the game 4-4.
Terre Haute loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the fifth, prompting a pitching change for the Paints. Cal McAninch took over for the starter Mitch Milheim. McAninch gave up a sacrifice fly to Brendan Sher, which scored Will Hayes to put the REX back in front at 5-4. McAninch and the Paints' defense were able to get out of the inning without any other runs being scored. Milheim finished the night throwing four innings and allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits, walking three and striking out three.
The REX extended their lead to 6-4 with another run in the bottom of the sixth inning. McAninch finished his outing after surrendering one run on two hits, walking one and striking out one.
In the top of the ninth, the REX put their closer, Colten Panaranto, on the mound. He walked Chris Eisel to start the inning. Gavin Homer hit a double inside the bag at third, putting runners at second and third with no outs. Andrews grounded out to shortstop, scoring Eisel. Smith singled, scoring Homer, tying the game 6-6. Hajdukovic singled, but Smith was thrown out at third by right fielder Carter Bridge for the second out. McIntyre then sent a high fly ball into right, which was dropped by Bridge, allowing Hajdukovic to score, giving the Paints their first lead of the night at 7-6.
Austin Calopietro (6-1) picked up the win for the Paints. The right-hander throw 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one. Nate Haugh earned his Prospect League leading 11th save of the season and he had to earn it. The right-hander entered with one out and two on in the bottom of the eighth. He induced two groundouts to end the inning. In the ninth, the REX loaded the bases, but Haugh struck out Jeremy Houston looking, ending the game with the Paints getting the win 7-6.
Chillicothe is on the road in Springfield, Ohio, Monday night, where they take on the Champion City Kings at 6:35 p.m.
