Paints Beat Kings 5-3

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Chillicothe Paints (14-15), presented by Adena Health System, topped the Champion City Kings (11-19) 5-3 Wednesday night at VA Memorial Stadium.

Champion City took an early lead with two runs on four hits in the top of the first. Mathew Furuto singled, stole second base and scored on a Lee Sponseller RBI single. Sponseller then scored two batters later on an Andrew Fishel RBI single.

In the bottom of the third, the Paints got on the board. Jack Thompson led off with a single, followed by a Nate Grys double to put runners at second and third with no one out. Stewart Nelson then singled home Thompson. Nelson was able to advance to second on the throw home. Michael Blatchford then walked to load the bases. Jamie Lackner grounded out to third for an RBI fielder's choice that scored Grys, who just beat a throw to the plate. Blatchford then scored when Dalton Bollinger was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, putting the Paints up 3-2 after three.

Chillicothe added a run in the fourth. With one out, Thompson doubled. Grys then hit his second double of the game, scoring Thompson to make it 4-2 Paints.

In the bottom of the sixth, Grys doubled for a third time and scored on a Champion City error. It was 5-2 Paints after six.

Champion City was able to scratch across an unearned run in the top of the ninth, but the game ended with the Paints in front 5-3.

Kevin Zullo (2-1) earned the win. He allwed two runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out five over five innings. Perley Provost pitched three scoreless innings of relief. Jake Horew pitched the ninth and allowed one unearned run on one hit to earn his second save of the season.

Dalton Greenwalt (0-1) took the loss for Champion City. He allowed five runs, four earned, on ten hits, walked two and struck out three over 6 1/3 innings.

The Paints and Kings play again Thursday night at VA Memorial Stadium in the first game of the second half of the season at 7:05 p.m. It's Thirsty Thursday - 12 ounce draft beer is just $1.
