Forest City Owls News Release

Fayetteville, NC- With the Forest City Owls' 2012 season teetering on the brink, Will Chandler launched a three-run home run off James Simmons to turn a three-run deficit into a tie game in the top of the 8th inning. However, Chandler's Francis Marion teammate Jacob Golliday dashed Forest City's hopes with a solo home run off Nate Cudney in the bottom of the 8th inning. That run provided the difference in the SwampDogs' 11-6 win Friday night.

The loss eliminates the Owls from the Petitt Cup Playoffs in the semifinals for the second straight year. Forest City finishes the year with a record of 37-25. The team has advanced into the final four teams in each of the last four seasons.

Alex Close drove in the first run of the game in the top of the 1st inning with a two-out RBI single. The SwampDogs quickly erased the deficit and took a 2-1 lead when Reed Harper drove a ball over the head of T.J. Sutton in right field to score two runs in the bottom of the 1st. Fayetteville increased its lead in the second, with three unearned runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Mike Tauchman.

Ryan Tezak surrendered all six of the `Dogs runs scored in the first three innings. He exited the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning with runners on first and second, after giving up an RBI single to Zach Gawrych. The two and two-thirds innings pitched marks the shortest outing of the season for the CPL All-Star.

Cudney came on and retired 14 of the first 15 batters he faced, allowing the Owls to chip away at the early five-run lead. Chandler rewarded that effort in the 8th inning. Nate Chong singled to start the inning and Close was hit by a pitch. Chandler followed with his 5th home run of the season, to tie the game at six runs apiece.

Golliday snapped the tie by taking Cudney deep to left field leading off the bottom of the 8th. After that, Forest City made some crucial mistakes, as a couple of defensive miscues led to four unearned runs, all adding to the Golliday game-winner as insurance for the SwampDogs victory.
