Outlaws Out-Slug Bombers, 15-12
July 21, 2011 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release
Wednesday night's game between the Dubois County Bombers and the Nashville Outlaws did not disappoint. The extreme heat (Heat Index of 115 Degrees Fahrenheit) played a big part in the game, but mainly for the pitchers. Each team's throwers got tired early and often as the two offenses combined for a total of 35 hits. The defense also was affected, as Nashville had three errors and Dubois County had six. In the end, Nashville won the slugfest by a score of 15-12.
Tomas Rodriguez (Mid Continent Univ.) started for the Bombers and took the loss as he gave up five runs (only two were earned) in just three innings. Tomas didn't help himself defensively, as he himself had two throwing errors.
After being down 10-2 early, the Bombers looked like they were done, but the offense fought back and by the end of the fifth inning, the deficit was cut to just one, with Nashville leading 11-10. However, Nashville never relinquished the lead and won the game 15-12.
Hits were aplenty Wednesday as Nashville stroked 21 and Dubois County held their own with 14. Five Outlaws finished with at least three hits. For the Bombers, first baseman Jamie Skagerlind (Bryant Univ.) led the way, going 2-for-4 with three RBI's. Outfielder Anthony Aceto (UCONN) had his best game of the second half, crushing a double and a triple in three at bats. Aceto also had a hand in putting runs up, as he drove in a pair and scored twice as well. Danny Poma, Aric Marquardt, Kolin Conner, and T.J. Thomas also had multi-hit games.
The game was exciting yet odd because a shortage of position players and extreme heat forced the Bombers defenders to play out of position. Jordan Eich, a pitcher who hasn't appeared in any other position, played left field for the majority of the game. Outfielder T.J. Thomas was at third base, where he did make a nice barehanded play in the sixth inning. Joe Perez, the normal third baseman, was pushed to shortstop, and utility man Aric Marquardt was playing second base. All four of these Bombers made their first appearance at their respective positions Wednesday.
Due to the probability of extreme heat tonight, the Bombers' rematch versus Nashville has been pushed back an hour. The originally slated game time was 7:15 pm, but the first pitch will now be thrown at 8:15 pm for the safety of everyone.
Also, it will be Thirsty Thursday at League Stadium where all 16 ounce bottles will be discounted to just $3.00. All 12 ounce Budweiser drafts are just $2.00. In addition, it will be Budweiser Night at the ballpark, where the Bud Girls will be in attendance and supplemental drink specials will take place. Come out and enjoy the game with your "buds!"
