Erie Otters News Release

The Erie Otters tried to battle back from a three-goal deficit but it proved to be too much as the Niagara IceDogs defeated the Otters, 3-2, in OHL preseason action Monday afternoon in St. Catharines.

Freddie Hamilton opened the scoring for the IceDogs with a power play goal from the top of the left circle at 2:01. The IceDogs outshot the Otters, 13-6, in the first period.

Andrew Agozzino doubled the lead for the IceDogs 7:52 into the second, as he fired a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle over the glove of Ramis Sadikov. Hamilton then added his second goal of the game at 9:20 of the second period with a backhander.

Scott Mitchell quickly answered for the Otters 19 seconds later as he knocked in a rebound from a shot by Derek Holden to put the Otters on the board, making it a 3-1 game.

Sadikov made 18 saves for the Otters, and he was again replaced by Chris Festarini halfway through the second period. Festarini made an immediate impact by stopping Andrew Howes on a breakaway shortly after entering the contest.

Festarini stopped all 13 shots he faced for Erie.

Luke Cairns converted on a two-man advantage to put the Otters within a goal after blasting a shot off the post into the net with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. The Otters attempted valiantly to tie the game late, but the IceDogs held off the Otters to hand Erie their second straight 3-2 defeat.

Mitchell earned third star honors for his goal and several hits around the rink as he continues his bid for a roster spot. The Otters outshot the IceDogs, 13-7, in the third period.

The Otters will take a ten day break before resuming their preseason schedule with another trip to St. Catharines to battle the IceDogs Thursday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m.

Come out to Tullio Arena and watch the Otters kick off their 15th season in Erie at their home opener Saturday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. against the Saginaw Spirit. The late Vinny Scott's No. 18 will be retired before the game. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, the Civic Center box office, ottershockey.com or by calling 452-4857.
