THE STAKES: After missing a golden opportunity to even its record at 4-4 last weekend, the Orlando Predators know that this week's game against division-leading New Orleans (7-1) is critical if Orlando is entertaining any hopes of making the post-season.
For the Predators, 3-5, it has become a must-win game. Orlando fell to the 14th spot in the playoff race (eight teams qualify) after suffering a 55-46 loss to the then 1-6 Destroyers last weekend.
"Its been an extremely frustrating year, because I know we have more talent then we are displaying," Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden said. "Obviously we have painted ourselves into a huge corner and now we have just two choices, we can either pack it in for the season or come out swinging on Friday night. New Orleans is an outstanding team and it won't be an easy task, but it's time for some people to step it up and play up to their potentials."
Gruden went on to say that although his team has lost five games, a spot in the playoffs is not out of reach. "A lot of teams are starting to knock each other off," Gruden added. "A 6-2 finish will put us at 9-7 and that may be good enough and a 7-1 finish would put us at 10-6 and I think that would definitely get us in. But if we play like we did last week, we won't have a chance. It's in our hands."

QUOTE/UNQUOTE
"For some reason the schedule makers must have felt that every team in the league needed two weeks to prepare for us."
--Orlando Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden after realizing that when this week's game with New Orleans is included, it will mark the fourth time this season his team will be playing an opponent following their "bye" week.
THE COACHES
PREDS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN
After spending the last two seasons as the team's quarterback, JAY GRUDEN returned to the bench as the team's head coach in 2004. Gruden began his coaching career in 1997, serving as offensive assistant for the Nashville Kats. One season later, the Predators made him the youngest head coach in the AFL. Gruden would go on to lead the Predators to three consecutive appearances in the ArenaBowl and a pair of championships. After guiding the Predators to a fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs, Gruden shocked the AFL world by announcing his intentions to resign in order to return to the playing field. In two seasons, Gruden directed the Predators to back-to-back appearances in the semifinals, falling one game short of his goal each season. In 2003, he recorded a 10-0 record with 49 touchdown passes and two interceptions as a starting quarterback during the regular season. Off-season surgery, combined with the tragic loss of former Head Coach Fran Papasedero in a June 19 traffic accident, resulted in Gruden returning to the sideline. Gruden will take a 46-28 (.621) all-time coaching record into the Georgia game. He is 38-26 in regular season games (.593) and 8-2 as a head coach in playoff games (.800).

New Orleans Head Coach Mike Neu
Former Predators quarterback Mike Neu is in his first season with the New Orleans VooDoo and his third as an Arena Football Head Coach. Neu began his coaching career with the Nashville Kats in 1998, where he was quarterbacks coach and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1999. He became head coach of the Augusta Stallions of the "af2" league in 2000, where he guided that team to an outstanding 14-4 record in his first season. He then joined the Carolina Cobras in 2001 as offensive coordinator, where he was promoted to Head Coach for the final game of the season. With Carolina that season, he helped guide the Cobras to a 7-7 record (a marked improvement from the team's 3-14 record a year before) and headed an offense that finished seventh in the league in scoring at more than 56 points per game. He was named permanent head coach in the off-season and paced the Cobras to a 7-9 record, and a first-ever playoff win. He was named the first Head Coach of the expansion New Orleans VooDoo on June 17, 2003. Neu, considered one of the top young coaches in the AFL, will bring a 14-11 record as an AFL head coach into this Friday's game. Neu's professional playing career includes stops with the Calgary Stampeders (CFL) in 1995, Orlando Predators in 1996 and Nashville Kats in 1997. With the Predators, he played in two games, completing 3 of 4 passes for 22 yards and one touchdown. He played four seasons at Ball State, where he was MAC Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year in 1993.
Quick Fact: The New Orleans VooDoo is owned by Tom Benson â who is also one of the mostly widely respected owners in the NFL, having purchased the New Orleans Saints nearly 20 years ago!
SERIES NOTES:
There is no history between the franchises, as the New Orleans VooDoo joined the Arena Football League as a 2004 expansion team...in addition to Head Coach Mike Neu's relationship with the Predators, the VooDoo have several other connections to Orlando...former Predators defensive backs coach Kevin Porter (1999), holds a similar post with the New Orleans franchise...VooDoo players QB Jermaine Alfred, OL/DL BJ Cohen, and K Brian Schmitz are all former Predators players...New Orleans plays in the same division (Southern) as the Predators and the teams will meet at least one more time this season on May 9 in New Orleans.

Orlando made several roster moves this week, as WR/LB James Bowden (groin) was placed on the injured reserve list. Orlando then used the roster spot to activate FB/LB Idris Price on Wednesday. Head Coach Jay Gruden hinted other changes may be in the mix, but will wait later in the week before making those changes.

McENTYRE LOOKS TO TIE/BREAK ALL-TIME
INTERCEPTION RECORD
Kenny McEntyre's quest to become the Arena Football League's all-time interception leader remained on hold last week as he was shutout against the Columbus Destroyers. McEntyre (49 career interceptions), who is one pick behind Durwood Roquemore (50) for first place on the all-time list, will attempt to tie and/or break the record at home this week against the New Orleans VooDoo.

PREDATORS TO HONOR PAST AT GAME
The new ownership group of the Orlando Predators will honor its past, recognizing the 1991 Orlando Predators AFL expansion franchise during pre-game activities. During the ceremony, the Predators will salute the original owners and staff of the franchise. The original owners include Majority General Partner Davey Johnson (Celebrity Football, Inc.), General Partners Tracy Allen and Mike McBath (Pro Visions, Inc.), and limited partners Mick O'Brien, Orlando Football Partners, Inc. (Donald R. Dizney and James English), William and Barbara Hampton, David Van Daam, Allen Schwalb, and LPI, Inc. (Lou Frey). Several other owners that came in during the second year will also be honored.
In addition, the team will pay tribute to the original front office staff, that includes Managing General Partner Tracy Allen, Director of Operations Denny Petro, Director of Marketing/Media Relations Eric Leins, and Director of Promotions Billy McGeehee. Head Coach Perry Moss, assistants Les Moss, Jim Niblack and Tom Bland formed the first coaching staff.
"The day to recognize these people is way past due," Orlando Predators President Bret Bouchy said. "All the games we have won, the two championships, and the contributions we have made to the Orlando community can be traced back to the vision, determination, hard work and investment of these founders. Simply put, our past, present and future would not have been possible without this group."
Although the first Orlando Predators team finished with a 3-7 record â the only losing season in franchise history -- the groundwork was put in place for a team that would become the model for the entire Arena Football League to follow.
The following year, the team won its first division title, began a string of 25 consecutive sellouts and a 12-year strings of consecutive winning seasons and playoff appearances â streaks the remain active today.
"As we approach our 15th anniversary next season, it's important to remember our past," Bouchy added. "We owe this group a lot of thanks."

McENTYRE IS TRUE IRONMAN
Kenny "The Glove" McEntyre has been one of the toughest competitors to ever wear a Predators uniform. Despite numerous injuries in his career, McEntyre has yet to miss a start since coming to the Predators in the tail end of the 1998 season. Counting the game against Columbus last week, McEntyre has now answered the bell for 96 consecutive games -- a team record.
FLEMING KEEPS STING ALIVE; HAS ONE OF TOP RECEIVING GAMES IN PREDATORS HISTORY
With 13 catches for 164 yards and three touchdowns last week against Columbus, WR/LB Cory Fleming has now caught at least one touchdown pass in 17 consecutive games with the Predators. Fleming has also scored at least one touchdown in 23 of 25 career games with Orlando. In addition, Fleming's 164 yards receiving last week was the eight highest single game total in Orlando Predators history; his 13 receptions tied for the second most receptions in a single game (Fleming has 13 receptions earlier this year against Tampa Bay for 151 yards). Fleming's totals marked his fourth 100-yard game of the season and the 32nd of his career.

PREDATORS RUNNING BALL IN 2004
The emergence of rookie FB/LB Marlon Moye-Moore, combined by solid seasons by quarterback Connell Maynor and veteran Rupert Grant has given the Predators a formidable running attack in 2004. After averaging just 7.5 yards per game in their first two contests, the Predators have compiled 270 rushing yards in their last six games (45.0 average), including a solid 48 yards last week against the Columbus Destroyers. Moye-Moore led the way with 42 yards on just seven carries (6.0 average), and now leads the Predators with 108 yards and a 5.7 yards per rush carry. Among fullbacks with 10 or more attempts, Moore's 5.7 average leads all AFL fullbacks in yards per carry. Orlando also has two players in the top 10 in rushing (Moye-Moore 5th â 108) and Rupert Grant (t9th â 85).

ARENA FOOTBALL LEAGUE WILL REACH 1,000,000th FAN OF 2004 SEASON AT PREDATORS-NEW ORLEANS GAME
The Arena Football League will surpass the one-million mark in attendance for the ninth consecutive season when the Orlando Predators host the New Orleans VooDoo at TD Waterhouse Centre on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Through nine weeks, the League has drawn a total of 989,993 fans in 80 games, an average of 12,375 fans per game. With the Orlando-New Orleans game the only one on Friday night, the Predators will most likely have the honor of admitting Arena Football's 1,000,000th fan of the 2004 season. The Predators would need to draw 10,007 fans to reach that mark. As of close of business on Tuesday, the Predators have already sold 11,500 tickets to the game. Orlando will recognize the 1,000,000 fan of 2004 with a gift pack.
This will be the fastest that the AFL has ever reached the milestone (one million in 88 games in 2003). The League still has eight full weeks remaining on its 2004 schedule.
This season's 12,375 average represents a nine-percent attendance increase vs. 2003 when the League averaged 11,397 fans.
With eight weeks remaining, the AFL has had 11 sellouts. The Columbus Destroyers have a chance at their fourth sellout this weekend when they host the Eastern Division-leading New York Dragons (5-3) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
ET. A sellout would tie the expansion Philadelphia Soul for the League lead in sellouts in 2004. The Soul have a bye week.
HAMILTON SET TO RETURN
Orlando Predators quarterback Joe Hamilton, who has missed the last two games with injury, is slated to return as the Predators starting quarterback this week against the New Orleans VooDoo. Hamilton has completed 103 of 162 passes (63.6% this year) for 1,243 yards, 23 touchdowns and just three interceptions for a quarterback rating of 114.7. He was hurt in the first quarter (left knee sprain) of the Chicago game two weeks ago and missed both the Indiana and Columbus games.
3-5 START SLOWEST IN FRANCHISE HISTORY
Orlando's 3-5 start ties the 2002 and 1991 teams for the worst start in franchise's 14 AFL seasons. Orlando can take solace in the fact that the Predators still made the playoffs in five of their six worst starts...advancing to the ArenaBowl in two of those seasons. A chart of the Predators all-time slow starts:
Year First 8 Final Record Playoffs
1. 1991 3-5 3-7 No
2002 3-5 7-7 Yes (9-8)
2004 3-5 ? ?
4. 1996 4-4 9-5 Yes (9-6)
1999 4-4 7-7 Yes (9-8)
6. 2001 5-3 8-6 yes (8-7)
1998 5-3 9-5 yes (12-5)
BOWDEN GONE FOR AT LEAST TWO WEEKS
Orlando Predators WR/LB James Bowden will be lost for at least two weeks after injuring his groin in the Columbus game.
INAUGURAL ORLANDO PREDATORS BLACK AND RED BALL SLATED FOR MAY 1
The Orlando Predators will host their inaugural Black and Red Ball on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at the TD Waterhouse Centre beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Black Tie Optional event will take place on the Predators playing field and all of the proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald House and other select Orlando charities. The event will honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the Predators organization, with Head Coach Jay Gruden being the first honoree.
Arena Football League Commissioner David C. Baker will deliver the keynote address. Pat Clarke, sports director of WESH-TV in Orlando, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. A number of other special guests from the sports and entertainment fields have been invited.
The event will include a cocktail hour, silent and live auction, dinner, presentations, live music and dancing. Single seats to the event are $125 each, with tables of 10 (eight seats plus a Predators player, guest or coach) available for $1,200. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
"Over the years, the Predators have always had a good track record of involvement in the Central Florida community through its community relations programs. We have used our resources to help hundreds or organizations with their individual fund raisers," Predators President Brett Bouchy said. "But we also made a conscious decision to become more involved in our community. It started last year when we began securing local ownership of the team and now we are ready to take it to the next level with the creation of the Black and Red Ball. We envision this annual affair becoming a significant event on the Orlando social calendar."

PLAYERS TO WATCH
NEW ORLEANS AT ORLANDO
Predators WR/LB Cory Fleming:
A former two-time All-Arena selection, Cory Fleming is off to the best offensive start of his AFL career. Through eight games, Fleming has 67 receptions for 880 yards and a team-leading 17 touchdowns. Projected through a 16-game season, Fleming is on pace to catch 134 passes for 1,760 yards and 34 touchdowns. Those totals would not only set career highs, but would also shatter the Orlando Predators single season record in all three categories. With the Predators offense struggling, look for Hamilton to try to get the ball to Fleming often on Friday night.
VooDoo OS Aaron Bailey
A former regular in the Indianapolis Colts rotation (63 games played from 1994-98) this former NFL and XFL player is posting huge numbers in his fourth AFL season. Bailey played in relative obscurity with the Carolina Cobras for the past two seasons but has emerged as New Orleans most dangerous receiver. In eight games, he has 47 receptions for 667 yards and 19 touchdowns. In addition, he is averaging more than 19 yards on 28 kickoff returns, including a long return of 55 yards for a touchdown. He is averaging 150 all-purpose yards per game.
Predators QB Joe Hamilton
Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden will be looking for a spark from Hamilton, who returns after missing all but one quarter of the last three games. Hamilton was off to a terrific start, before being injured in the next to last drive of the Georgia game (March 12). He returned the following week of the Chicago game, only to leave with a strained left knee in the first quarter. He would miss the next two games, as Orlando went 1-2 in his absence.
VooDoo FB/LB Dan Curran
The Arena Football League's leading rusher, Curran has 190 yards on 39 carries. His 4.9 yards per carry is among the best in the Arena Football League and he has scored a whopping 12 rushing touchdowns in just eight games. Curran also averages 15 yards per receptions (3-45) and has 16 tackles this season with a quarterback sack and a forced fumble.
