One Shell of a Good Time Coming to South Georgia

ALBANY, GA- Albany's professional baseball team has a name- the South Georgia Peanuts! The name and team logo were unveiled at a public ceremony this past Thursday night at the State Theatre in downtown Albany.

The Peanuts were one of hundreds of catchy names suggested in a "Name the Team" contest. Other submissions that were considered were the Albany Anacondas, Albany Snappers, and South Georgia Heat, but in the end, the name Peanuts just seemed to fit. Georgia and peanuts are synonymous for many reasons -- nearly half of the peanut crop in the United States is grown within its borders. Last year, 80 counties in Georgia produced almost 2 billion pounds of peanuts.

"We were thrilled to see everyone who came out tonight to help celebrate Albany's team name unveiling," said Chief Executive Officer Jamie Toole. "This community is passionate about baseball and we are looking forward to affordable family entertainment and a competitive ballclub to South Georgia."

To help celebrate the new name, the South Georgia Peanuts invited everyone to join in a celebration at the State Theatre in Albany. While the refreshments were being served, the Peanuts' staff offered promotions and contests with many great prizes up for grabs, including merchandise featuring the new team logo. The Peanut logo, a smiling peanut donning a baseball cap and glove within the word "Peanuts", was created by FSDesign in Chattanooga.

Select team merchandise items are now available, including caps and t-shirts featuring the South Georgia Peanuts new logo. Season tickets are now on sale for the 2007 inaugural season, with a $50 deposit required to reserve a seat.

The South Georgia ball club will take the field at the Paul Eames Sports Complex. Unlike minor league teams that are affiliated, the Independent South Georgia club will be responsible for scouting, signing and paying their own players. Offering fan-friendly, affordable fun, they will join five other charter clubs to begin South Coast League play in May of 2007.
