Omaha to Host 2010 UFL Championship Game
Published on October 18, 2010 under United Football League (UFL 1) News Release
OMAHA, NE - Monday, October 18, 2010 - Omaha will host the 2010 United Football League Championship Game at 11am CDT on Saturday, November 27 at the city's historic Rosenblatt Stadium. The UFL season showpiece will be broadcast live on VERSUS at 12pm EDT.
Omaha was selected as the host city after its team the Nighthawks led all criteria outlined in May when fans of the United Football League were empowered with a unique opportunity to influence the decision on where the Championship Game would be played.
Several factors were considered during the first four weeks of the season, including each team's record and local fan support, which was defined as a combination of attendance, fan club membership, social media interaction and atmosphere in the home stadium. At 2-1, the Nighthawks tied the Las Vegas Locos for the best record after four weeks of the season and led the league in all fan-related categories. The team's opening two games were sellouts, both attracting partisan crowds of more than 23,000, while team Facebook and Twitter account memberships total more than 15,000.
"In addition to the performances of head coach Jeff Jagodzinski's team on the field, we are rewarding the Omaha fans for their passion and phenomenal support of the Nighthawks by bringing the 2010 UFL Championship Game to their city," said United Football League Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE. "The local fans will guarantee a fine spectacle at what will be the final sporting event in the long and storied history of Rosenblatt Stadium.
"There were other teams who also deserved to host the game and we did not eliminate those other cities, we chose Omaha. We would have felt comfortable awarding the game to any of our cities."
The game will be played 24 hours later than originally scheduled, on Saturday, November 27 at 11am CDT / 12pm EDT and a live telecast will air on VERSUS.
"We look forward to the opportunity to once again present live coverage of the UFL Championship game to a national audience" said JEFF GOLDBERG, Vice President of Programming for VERSUS. "It took a field goal in overtime to clinch the title for Las Vegas in last year's title game and we expect the same kind of intense action for our viewers in the league's second annual Championship contest."
The emergence of the Nighthawks, who sold out the team's first home game only 160 days after the Omaha expansion franchise was announced, has provided an economic stimulus to the region and the team has generated significant merchandise and apparel sales for local vendors. The Championship Game is expected to generate an economic impact in the region of $5 million.
"We invite local businesses to meet with us and discuss opportunities associated with the Championship Game that can be mutually beneficial," added Huyghue. "We anticipate the planned week of events and activities to appeal within all areas of the local community."
Omaha Mayor JIM SUTTLE said: "I am excited that the UFL has selected our city to close out its second season. We have been impressed by the reaction of the city's sports fans and how they have embraced the Nighthawks. I am pleased that the Nighthawks have become a part of our community, particularly through their presence at the Kroc Center where they practice and interact with local youth."
President & CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber DAVID G. BROWN added: "Hosting the UFL showpiece will provide a welcome economic boost to the region. The Greater Omaha Chamber looks forward to working with the UFL on the Championship Game initiatives and we are delighted Omaha has been selected as host only six months since the expansion franchise was announced."
In appreciation of fans' commitment to the Nighthawks, season ticket holders will have an exclusive opportunity to purchase their same seats for the UFL Championship Game. Those fans will also receive one complimentary parking pass per account with their purchase and a chance to buy additional tickets for the game, provided they are ordered before November 3. After that date, tickets will go on sale to the general public. Ticket prices will range from $20 to $50.
Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas was selected to host the 2009 UFL Championship Game prior to the inaugural UFL season and the hometown Locos were crowned champions following a 20-17 overtime victory over the Florida Tuskers.
