Omaha Sports Legend Marlin Briscoe To Perform United Football League Championship Game Coin Toss
Published on November 26, 2010 under United Football League (UFL 1) News Release
OMAHA, NE - Friday, November 26 - MARLIN BRISCOE, the first African-American quarterback to ever start a National Football League/American Football League game, will perform the coin toss at the United Football League Championship Game on Saturday at 11 a.m. Central (noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific) at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska.
Briscoe, who played high school football at Omaha South High School and collegiately at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, became the first African-American quarterback to start a game in either the American Football League or the National Football League when he did so for the AFL's Denver Broncos during the 1968 season. As a rookie with the Broncos, Briscoe threw for 1,589 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Former Nebraska quarterback TOMMIE FRAZIER will deliver the game ball to the game officials and UFL Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE prior to kickoff.
"We are honored to have two greats of Nebraska football perform these pregame ceremonies as we celebrate our championship in Omaha," said Commissioner Huyghue. "They are both role models for the local community and for youngsters who play the game of football and I thank them for joining us at Rosenblatt Stadium."
Briscoe played nine seasons in the AFL/NFL with the Broncos (1968), Buffalo Bills (1969-71), Miami Dolphins (1972-74), San Diego Chargers (1975), Detroit Lions (1975) and New England Patriots (1976). Briscoe made the transition from quarterback to wide receiver, and his best receiving season came with the Bills in 1970, catching 57 passes for 1,036 yards and eight touchdowns.
Briscoe won two Super Bowl titles with the Dolphins. During his AFL/NFL career, his career numbers included 224 catches for 3,537 yards and 30 touchdowns, 49 rushes for 336 yards and three touchdowns and 1,697 yards and 14 touchdowns passing.
Frazier led his team to back-to-back consensus national championships in 1994 and 1995, and he remains the only quarterback to have done so since the 1950s. The 1995 Nebraska is considered to have been one of the most dominant in the history of American college football. In a 2006 ESPN poll, the 1995 Nebraska team was voted the best college team of all time.
The Championship Game will pit the Florida Tuskers against the Las Vegas Locomotives in a rematch of the UFL's 2009 championship game. It will be the final major sporting event played in the 62-year history of Rosenblatt Stadium and will air live on Versus at 12 noon Eastern and live on the www.YouTube.com/theUFL platform. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.com and by calling 402-403-3776.
